The latest story trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 not only showed off Venom in the game, but also revealed that Mister Negative will be back, something his voice actor celebrated on social media.

Oyoung is happy to see Mister Negative return

Taking to Twitter, Stephen Oyoung — who voiced and played Mister Negative in the original game — celebrated the news, sharing the moment his character appears in the trailer with a celebratory “he’s back!” message.

The new trailer, which arrived yesterday from San Diego Comic-Con 2023, had a brief moment where Miles Morales runs into Mister Negative (aka Martin Li), wearing what looks to be a prison jumpsuit and sporting longer hair. In the trailer, Miles is clearly angry with him, yelling that Li doesn’t know what he’s taken from Morales.

In the original game, Li is one of the early antagonists that Peter Parker faces off against, and plays a pivotal part in the story. Li is the employer of May Parker and helps run F.E.A.S.T., but secretly runs a criminal organization known as the Inner Demons. After defeating Li in the game, he disappears, but his arrest is confirmed later in the game.

With Secret Invasion releasing a new episode every week on Disney+, let’s look at a few of the many Marvel games that feature Skrulls — the shape-shifting aliens at the center of the new Marvel Cinematic Universe series.

Fantastic Four (1997)

Given the Fantastic Four is all about exploration and gaining knowledge, it makes sense that an alien species with wild powers like the Skrulls would frequently appear in media involving Marvel’s first family. This includes the 1997 PlayStation game.

The PS1 Fantastic Four game got pretty harsh reviews upon release, but it does feature the Skrull homeworld — one of the many times it would be threatened by Galactus across different mediums.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance (2006)

To this day, Marvel Ultimate Alliance is held in high esteem by Marvel fans and gamers alike. The game sees many of Marvel’s most iconic characters band together to take on a wide variety of massive threats, from the murderous Arcade to Doctor Doom. The game features a section on the Skrull Planet, as well as an appearance from Kl’rt the Super-Skrull as a boss. You can actually choose to save the Skrulls and their planet from Galactus, leading to a partnership between humans and Skrulls.

The game has been rereleased, though it was taken back down in some regions, assumedly due to licensing agreements. If it ever goes back up on sale on modern consoles to promote an Avengers movie, be sure to grab it while you can.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes (2013)

Lego games are always a straightforward delight to play through, especially when they feature characters from a franchise you enjoy. Lego Marvel Super Heroes brought together characters from every corner of the Marvel universe, from the X-Men to the Fantastic Four.

Amongst the 180 playable characters in the game is the previously mentioned Kl’rt the Super-Skrull, played by voice acting legend John DiMaggio. You have to melt a block of ice that has his character token in it to unlock him, but his Fantastic Four-based powers make him more than worth unlocking.

Marvel’s Avengers: Battle for Earth (2012)

Marvel’s Avengers: Battle for Earth certainly isn’t the one that people typically think of when they hear “Marvel fighting game,” but it’s an interesting little game despite being quickly forgotten after release. The title is largely based on the Skrull-focused Secret Invasion comic storyline, so it makes sense for Skrulls to feature heavily.

Super Skrull is one again playable, while the antagonists include Queen Veranke and a variety of Skrull imposters disguised as Earth’s mightiest heroes. If you’ve ever read the 2008 Marvel Comics storyline, you’ll find a lot of aspects of this game to be quite familiar.

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (2011)

We talked a bit about Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 earlier, but it’s worth mentioning again. It’s one of Capcom’s finest fighting games, which is saying a lot given the studio’s pedigree when it comes to that genre. The wide range of characters from both companies make for an incredibly diverse roster, which once again includes Super Skrull.

The character shines here more than in any other game adaptation, as he’s able to utilize all of the Fantastic Four members’ powers with his different specials and super attacks. Plus, the quotes he has between different characters pay homage to plenty of great comic moments. A lot of care went into portraying all these characters well, making this a blast of a game for comic fans in addition to fighting game fans.

Ahead of the game’s release on October 20, 2023, the official Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 theme is out for all to listen to.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 theme is all about coming together

The Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 theme, titled “Greater Together,” was officially debuted over the weekend at The Game Awards 10-Year Concert in Los Angeles, a one-night event that featured live music from some of the biggest video games of the last decade.

Alongside some classics from titles like God of War, The Last of Us, and more, the very first performance of the Spider-Man 2 theme was played, with the song later uploaded to Spotify.

You can listen to the theme for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 below:

Musically, the song acts as a coming together of sorts for both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. The song begins with Peter Parker’s theme from the first game, before Miles Morales’ theme from Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales slowly takes over. Then, the two songs merge, coming together for one big track.

So far, not a ton is known about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, but we do know that the game will feature some “brutal” combat, as well as a significantly larger map than the first game. The game will also not have any co-op in it despite some rumors pointing to the contrary.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was the showpiece of the PlayStation Showcase. It came with a long demo, but many also expected a solid date to come with it, given how it is Sony’s biggest holiday game. Insomniac Games has now come out and explained why the the studio didn’t give a Spider-Man 2 release date during the show.

A Spider-Man 2 release date will come when the team is “confident”

Creative director Bryan Intihar spoke to The Washington Post about the game and acknowledged the elephant in the room. He noted that Insomniac wanted to be confident that Spider-Man 2 will hit the date the developer announces, which, reading between the lines, means the superhero sequel isn’t quite at that point yet.

“It’s really just making sure that we’re really confident that when we announce the date, we’re going to hit it,” said Intihar. “It’s really just about that.”

Aside from the studio’s 2016 reboot of Ratchet & Clank, Insomniac games typically don’t see delays, either. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and 2018’s Spider-Man are just a few examples recent AAA games that have hit the first date they were announced for, something that’s becoming very rare in the medium.

There’s nothing concrete, but Venom voice actor Tony Todd released a series of peculiar tweets in March stating that he heard the game will come out in September. It was an odd saga, as he put on a Venom-like voice shortly after saying it was the “person that has taken over Tony Todd’s Twitter feed” and to “not listen to anything he says” before closing out the video by stating that he has to “get out of Twitter jail.” Insomniac’s first Spider-Man game came out on September 7, 2018, so there’s some precedent there for a September release, but there’s still no official confirmation.

With Secret Invasion — Marvel‘s next big Disney+ series — on the horizon, you may be feeling the urge to revisit some classic Marvel games. Though there’s no shortage of options, let’s look at the five best Marvel games to play if you’re looking forward to Secret Invasion.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

As far as fighting games go, there’s nothing quite like Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Originally released in 2011, the game still has a passionate following over a decade later thanks to its tight combos, varied character roster, and seemingly endless amount of reverence for both Marvel and Capcom.

The roster serves as a bit of a time capsule for that era, mixing MCU heavyweights like Iron Man and Hulk with (then) lesser-known characters like Rocket Raccoon, Iron Fist, and Nova. The fighting is snappy, the arcade endings are full of fun fanservice, and even the music is top-notch. If you like fighting games and Marvel, this is absolutely one of best Marvel games to play if you’re looking forward to Secret Invasion — especially since Super Skrull is one of the most fun characters to play as.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

This one’s more of a Diablo-esque title, giving you control of some of Marvel’s most iconic characters as you navigate through the Civil War storyline of the comics. The game features different paths depending on where you stand on the matter of superhero registration, allowing you to side with either Iron Man and Mister Fantastic or Captain America and Luke Cage.

The selection of playable heroes is impressive, with even more fan favorites serving as bosses and NPCs throughout the game. Though a third Marvel Ultimate Alliance eventually released for the Nintendo Switch, the first two games have a different and more comic book-y vibe to them, making Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 a great choice.

Lego Marvel’s Avengers

This one’s a great pick for if you’re specifically a big fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though there are a few different Lego Marvel games, Lego Marvel’s Avengers is set in the MCU and follows the plots of some of the biggest movies from that universe.

Using a mix of new and archived audio from iconic Marvel stars, the game is filled with a variety of characters and bonuses to unlock and use. It has an open world hub that you can explore and do minigames in whenever you want, plus a decently easy Platinum trophy to boot. If you’re an MCU fan, Lego Marvel’s Avengers is one of best Marvel games to play if you’re looking forward to Secret Invasion.

Guardians of the Galaxy

The great thing about the criminally underlooked Guardians of the Galaxy game is how it meshes movie and comic book influences to create a new and exciting take on the space-faring Marvel team. Secret Invasion is all about Skrulls, so why not play on Marvel’s cosmic side?

This single-player action game takes you across the galaxy as Star-Lord. As you battle all sorts of extraterrestrial enemies and an intergalactic cult, the team grows closer and closer, cementing their status as one of Marvel’s most memorable teams. If you’re a fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy comics or movies, you can’t go wrong with this one.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns

Now that all of the game’s DLC has been released, there’s no better time to jump onto Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Though this is focused more on the supernatural side of Marvel’s roster, it’s worth checking out for its impressive mechanics and characterization.

From big names like Spider-Man and Captain Marvel to fan-favorites like Blade and Ghost Rider, you can control a number of heroes (in addition to your own avatar, the Hunter) as you fight off enemies with a unique card-based tactics system. Then you can chill with your favorites back at your base between missions as you build up a friendship with them. Though it didn’t receive as much attention as it may have deserved, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is one of best Marvel games to play if you’re looking forward to Secret Invasion.

The Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 demo during the PlayStation Showcase had a key moment where the player pressed the Square button to switch to Miles Morales. Many had questions after about how character swapping was handled since it wasn’t clear if it would be based purely on the narrative. Insomniac Games has now come out and detailed how this mechanic will play out in the final game and when players can take advantage of Spider-Man 2’s character switching.

How the Spider-Man 2 character switching works

As spotted by Gematsu, game director Ryan Smith told Famitsu that players can move between the two Spider-Men freely within the (significantly larger) open world. Missions are a little different since some parts may require one specific Spider-Man, while others give users more freedom.

“There are things that are exclusive to a specific character depending on the content, but we’re also preparing content that allows you to play as whichever character you like,” said Smith. “While they’re both Spider-Man and have some things in common, Miles is speedier than Peter, and they each have their own quirks, so we hope you can choose your favorite character.”

It seems a bit like Grand Theft Auto V which had missions that locked players to certain characters, as well as ones that were more open and an open world that, for the most part, allowed users to freely switch between the different characters.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is still taking place in New York, but that doesn’t mean that the game will be the same size as the 2018 entry and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Insomniac Games has revealed roughly what the Spider-Man 2 map size will be and has even compared it to the scope of the last two titles.

The Spider-Man 2 map size is roughly “twice as big” as the other two games

As spotted by Gematsu, creative director Bryan Intihar talked to Famitsu more about the open-world title. He said that, by adding more boroughs, the game has approximately doubled in size when put against the other two Insomniac Spider-Man titles.

“We’ve added Queens and Brooklyn this time, so roughly speaking the map size is about two times larger than the previous titles,” said Intihar. “Since these two areas are somewhat smaller and residential, I think you’ll find them different from Manhattan. We’ve prepared some unexpected situations we haven’t done before, like a battle on the river between two of the cities, so I hope you’ll look forward to them.”

Intihar’s words about these areas being different are backed up by the PlayStation Showcase demo, as Miles Morales and Peter Parker spend most of their time on the waterfront, something that wasn’t present in the prior two games. This shift might partially explain the improved water technology that Digital Foundry pointed out in a recent video, too.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is ditching the shackles of the PlayStation 4 and will therefore have the capability to be more visually impressive when it comes out exclusively on PS5. Some of this newfound power was evident in the PlayStation Showcase segment, but now a new comparison video featuring this non-final build has broken down a handful of those improvements seen in this sequel.

Spider-Man 2 features a denser version of New York

Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie picked apart the footage and compared it to 2018’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. In it, Mackenzie took note of specific parts of the city that are in all three titles. And in every scenario, Spider-Man 2’s version of the structure included more details, additional effects, or more varied textures. Some buildings have been switched out completely or are wholly new. For example, Spider-Man 2 adds the Harlem Seafood Market building near the sea, something that wasn’t even there in the prior titles.

Mackenzie also noted of the improved water. Water now deforms and sprays more realistically when characters splash in it. Mackenzie even said that ray tracing probably explains why the reflections in the water were better.

The version will likely have at least some changes before release, something Mackenzie pointed out. As such, more exact pixel counts, rendering resolutions, and more will have to wait until sometime in the fall. Regardless, Mackenzie said that the demo ran from 1296p to 1872p, which is a dynamic 4K setup that is in line with the Fidelity Mode of the other games. He concluded by saying that Spider-Man 2 was iterating on what came before, but that it “continues to look excellent” with the multiple upgrades seen in the demo.

Spider-Man 2 for PS5 was officially announced at the PlayStation Showcase, but the news on whether it will be coming to PS4 has been known for a while.

Is there a Spider-Man 2 PS4 release date?

Spider-Man 2 does not have a PS4 release date and is not coming to the console.

Back in April, developer Insomniac Games claimed that the PS4’s hardware could not handle the high-quality visuals at high frame rates.

This is disappointing news to anyone who hasn’t upgraded to a current-gen console. However, PS5 owners can look forward to Spider-Man 2’s release knowing it will take full advantage of the console’s powerful hardware.

In the gameplay trailer, we saw a demonstration of how the player will be able to switch between Miles Morales and symbiote-driven Peter Parker during a battle against the Lizard and Kraven.

There is still no release date for Spider-Man 2, although Insomniac has claimed it will be released in the fall, which lines up with the rumored September release date.

The PlayStation Showcase was packed full of exciting news for PlayStation owners. Alongside the Spider-Man 2 gameplay reveal, the Assassin’s Creed Mirage release date was announced, and Bungie showed off their new project, Marathon.

After a long period of little to go on, Insomniac Games has shown off the latest Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 trailer at the PlayStation Showcase. It ended the show with over 10 minutes of gameplay, as well as an intro to Kraven the Hunter.

The Spider-Man 2 gameplay shows off both Spider-Men

The block started with that intro to Kraven, as he is seen hunting a poor soul that he calls inadequate. This leads him to New York, which has many more threatening beings to hunt.

It then transitions to more traditional gameplay, which kicks off with a symbiote-driven Peter Parker. These dark powers give him more destructive abilities and a more menacing disposition. He’s also got a new parry in addition to various symbiote attacks.

The point of view then shifts to Miles Morales, which demonstrates how players can go between each of the Spider-Men. Miles can glide (Peter can, as well) and move around the city more quickly than before because of the PS5’s SSD, as explained by Insomniac on the PlayStation Blog. After a brief sequence showing a couple of Miles’ new stealth and combat powers, the two then go on a chase, combating The Lizard and Kraven’s goons along the way in an explosive set piece.

Insomniac also pointed out on the PlayStation Blog that Miles and Peter will have separate skill trees, in addition to a shared one. As for the story, the team is “really delving into Peter’s personal relationship” with the symbiote and “how it affects those closest to him.”

Previous rumors pointed to a September release date, while Insomniac had only previously said it was releasing in the fall, which is still the case. However, a more exact release date (along with information on its special editions) is coming “soon.”
