Insomniac is on fire with its PS5 releases. After launching three games on PS5 in under a year (two new titles and one a remaster), the studio took the opportunity during today’s PlayStation Showcase to reveal not one, but two new PS5 exclusives in the works at the developer. Marvel’s Wolverine, currently “early in development,” received a short teaser, but Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was also revealed, with a longer trailer that gave a lot of new hints about the next chapter of Peter Parker and Miles Morales’ adventure. The teaser reveals that Venom will play a major part in the upcoming title, expected in 2023.
The trailer shows both Peter and Miles beating up on some bad guys. Peter’s suit has the additional Iron Spider-like limbs, which aid in combat, while Miles uses his electricity abilities (interestingly called “venom,” though no relation to the symbiote). There are even some shots of them working together to do takedowns. A voice with a thick accent narrates, talking about finding someone who is their equal—some fans guess this to be Kraven the Hunter. The voice asks, “Will one of you finally give me what I desire?” The shot shows Peter and Miles staring down an alley before it is briefly lit up and shows Venom. “We will,” the symbiote growls. Candyman’s Tony Todd voices Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Yuri Lowenthal and Nadji Jeter are back as Peter and Miles respectively.
It’s a short trailer—confirmed to be in-game footage—ending with a 2023 release window. Insomniac also later confirmed that it will be coming exclusively to PS5, so it looks like the studio is leaving the PS4 behind for its future projects. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a single-player adventure—sorry, no co-op Spider-Men with a friend. Once again, Insomniac promises to deliver not only a great superhero story, but a compelling human story that explores the faces behind the masks. Their track record thus far is top notch, so it’s safe to expect them to deliver with this sequel.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is coming exclusive to PS5 in 2023.
