Microsoft’s trial with the Federal Trade Commission mentioned an enhanced version of the PS5, as the Xbox maker said it was anticipating that Sony was developing a mid-gen upgrade for the console. Insider Tom Henderson also had said he was “100% confident” that a PS5 Pro was in development, and now he’s come out with a new report detailing more about the alleged system.

The PS5 Pro is reportedly slated for 2024

According to Henderson on his new site KeyToGaming, the PS5 Pro is codenamed Trinity, keeping with the Matrix codenames for the PS4 Pro and PlayStation VR, which were “Neo” and “Morpheus,” respectively. It has allegedly been in the works since early 2022 and many studios will have their development kits by November 2023. Sony is also apparently trying to target a November 2024 release date for the improved system.

Henderson noted that he couldn’t track down exact specs, but it is being built to have a better and more consistent frame rate at 4K. He also explained that there will be a new performance mode for 8K and better ray tracing. The PS5 does support ray tracing, but it’s often limited, especially within the context of what high-end PCs can do.

This latest report from Henderson is a more detailed update from his report in March. He has also previously reported accurately on Sony hardware. Henderson was the first to reveal details on Project Q, Sony’s wireless earbuds, and the DualSense Edge, all three of which were later confirmed. He also noted again that there is no slim PS5, but doubled down on the PS5 with a detachable disc drive, which he has reported on before.

It looks like the PS5 Pro is only a matter of time. Amidst rumors of mid-gen upgrades for both PS5 and Xbox Series X, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has said that they’re likely happening, but he doesn’t seem concerned about any potential impact on game development.

PS5 Pro won’t affect business, says Take-Two boss

During an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Zelnick was specifically asked if he thinks we’ll see mid-gen upgrades this time around, and whether they had any impact on business in the previous generation.

“We probably will,” Zelnick replied, adding that PS4 Pro and Xbox One X “did not affect the business very much.”

Rockstar Games juggernaut GTA V originally released for the PS3 and was later ported over to the PS4. Although the game was enhanced for PS5, it didn’t receive any mid-gen enhancements for the PS4 Pro. Considering this, it’s possible that Take-Two has no plans to go out of its way to accommodate mid-gen upgrades this time around either.

Rumors of PS5 Pro have been swirling for a while but Sony has remain tight-lipped. A number of insiders and journalists have corroborated the reports, but it doesn’t look like we’ll see anything until at least 2024.

The PS5 Pro is highly anticipated, with many wondering when Sony’s console will finally make its way to store shelves. The PlayStation 5 has been a clear leader of this current console generation, though there’s plenty of room for a more powerful version of the hardware. So is there a PS5 Pro release date, and when is it coming out?

When is the PS5 Pro release date?

The PS5 Pro is expected to come out around Q4 2024, so between October–December. This would see it release nearly a full four years following the base model of the console.

This PS5 Pro leak was revealed by Insider Gaming, which claimed that the hardware was currently in development. According to the report, dev kits are already in the hands of first-party studios, meaning that PlayStation game developers are currently working on the system.

Is the PS5 Pro coming out soon?

Sony has posted no official announcement of the PS5 Pro, and the company is reportedly in more discussions about the also unannounced PlayStation 6 than it is a follow-up to its PS5. However, given that reliable leakers have claimed it’s in production, we will hopefully see the console being released in the future.

Details on the PS5 Pro are sparse, as it’s unclear how much Sony will be looking to push the envelope with the hardware. The likelihood is that the console’s performance and quality modes will improve, with many hoping that both will be able to reliably hit 60 FPS and beyond. It has also been speculated that it will be able to support 8K resolutions, though given that the majority of households don’t have TVs that support such a resolution, Sony will have to offer more to convince those who are already PS5 owners to make the jump.

Insider Tom Henderson claims that he can say with “100 percent certainty” that PS5 Pro is in development. The rumor has been debated in gaming circles, with some people of the view that it doesn’t make sense for Sony to release a mid-gen upgrade this time around, especially considering the standard PS5 has only just become widely available.

PS5 with detachable disc drive will reportedly release before PS5 Pro

Henderson, who has a pretty good track record of leaking Sony’s hardware and accessories, claims that a PS5 with a detachable disc drive will release before PS5 Pro. The former is expected to release later this year and the latter is expected to release by the end of 2024.

Writing for Insider Gaming, Henderson said that contrary to popular belief, the PS5 with a detachable disc drive is not a PS5 Slim. It looks like this generation of consoles may not see any slimmer iterations.

As far as the PS5 Pro is concerned, Henderson claims that the first batch of dev kits will make their way to Sony’s first-party developers within the next couple of months, and third-party developers will get their hands on them by the end of 2023.

Sony also reportedly has a handheld remote play device, code-named Q Lite, in development.

We’ve checked the calendar to ensure we’re past April 1 because known insider Tom Henderson has claimed that Sony will release a new piece of hardware before the rumored PS5 Pro. However, it’s unclear if he’s talking specifically about PlayStation hardware or some other Sony gaming hardware.

We’ll hear more about the mysterious Sony/PlayStation hardware “soon”

“There’s another piece of Sony hardware that’ll be released before the Pro that I’m more likely to talk about very soon,” Henderson said in a livestream. He later stressed in a tweet that it wasn’t an April Fool’s joke and that the hardware hasn’t been reported on by anyone yet.

Henderson does have a very good track record when it comes to leaks but Sony has yet to announce some of the hardware he’s recently leaked, including the new PS5 with detachable disc drive and the PS5 Pro.

Although there’s no indication that he’s specifically talking about PlayStation hardware, there’s already been an influx of PS Vita 2 jokes but keep your expectations in check. Sony’s INZONE has been releasing PS5 and PC compatible gaming peripherals like gaming monitors and headsets so Henderson could be referring to yet another peripheral.

In the same livestream, Henderson also corroborated reports that Sony will hold a major PlayStation showcase before the Summer Game Fest 2023 in June.

Following last year’s PS5 Pro dev kit rumors, a new report has claimed that Sony’s mid-gen upgrade has entered production. Known insider Tom Henderson has heard from his sources that Sony will begin phasing out the original PS5 model later this year.

When will PS5 Pro release?

Writing for his publication Insider Gaming, Henderson claims that PS5 Pro is targeting a release window of late 2024. Before the upgrade launches, however, Sony will begin phasing out the current PS5 hardware and replace it with the rumored PS5 model that features a detachable disc drive, which will presumably be slimmer. That model is expected to be rolled out later in 2023.

Rumors of both PS5 with detachable disc drive and Pro console as well as a Pro controller began swirling last year. Sony has not confirmed the existence of the new console models but did end up announcing the Pro controller a.k.a DualSense Edge. That said, the company reportedly has a major showcase set to take place around E3 2023 so it’s possible that we’ll get confirmation of PS5 with detachable disc drive then.

Take all of this with a customary grain of salt, but a mid-gen upgrade doesn’t seem outside the realm of possibility.

The PlayStation 6 has been mentioned more than the long-rumored PS5 Pro, according to an insider, with this claim implying that the PS6 could be Sony’s next major hardware release. This is despite many believing that Sony would release a significantly updated version of the PS5, similar to what it did with the PS4 Pro.

PS5 Pro might not have ‘radical changes,’ PS6 on Sony’s radar

Insider Gaming owner Tom Henderson tweeted that they have “heard more about the PS6 than a PS5 Pro,” noting that they aren’t “entirely sure” if this generation will even see the release of an updated PS5. Henderson added that their understanding of the PS5 Pro rumors is that the hardware will be a “gen 2″ of the regular version of the console,” and that they do not believe there will be “radical changes” made to the console.

This seemingly runs in contrast to previous reports that Sony had already shipped out PS5 Pro dev kits to developers, with studios reportedly getting their hands on the kit in late 2022. However, it could be that these dev kits are related to the slightly upgraded versions of the PS5 discussed by Henderson, or the PS5 with a detachable disc drive that Henderson also previously teased.

Still, nothing has been confirmed by Sony either way, so we could still see the release of a PS5 Pro in the future — or the company could instead firmly be looking ahead to the next console generation and the PS6.

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced today that it has shipped another 3.3 million PS5 consoles in the second quarter of FY2022, bringing the lifetime total to 25 million units shipped. This news comes amid reports of a new model of PS5 as well as PS5 Pro, the dev kits for which are reportedly on their way to developers. Overall, Sony produced over 6.5 million new consoles in the second quarter of 2022, significantly improving stock.

PS5 is still lagging behind PS4 but PS5 Pro could change the game

PS5 is in the lead in the sales race when it comes to current-gen consoles but compared to its own predecessor, it’s still lagging by about four million units at the same point in the lifecycle. With 5.7 million PS5s shipped so far in FY2022, Sony is still well behind its target of selling 18 million units during the year, which it still thinks it can achieve by May 2023, when the financial year ends.

If rumors of PS5 Pro and a revised PS5 with a detachable disc drive are true, Sony may easily meet that target of selling 18 million, but it all depends on when these rumored consoles launch, and at what price. Availability of stock is equally important, of course.

A reputable insider has claimed that PS5 Pro and upgraded Xbox Series X dev kits (or whatever the rumored mid-gen upgrades will be called) should be in developers’ hands by early next year at the latest, if they don’t already have them by now. Tez2, who’s most known for his accurate Rockstar Games leaks, was responding to a poster in the GTA Forums who theorized that GTA 6 may launch alongside mid-gen hardware upgrades.

PS5 Pro has been rumored for a while

The upgraded PS5, not to be confused with the recently-leaked PS5 featuring a detachable disc drive that’ll feature the same specs as the current console, has been rumored since as early as 2021. Earlier this year, AMD sparked speculations by mentioning the development of a next-gen console chip nearly two years into the current cycle. This was followed by a presentation delivered by television manufacturer TCL in which the company said that it expects PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X upgrade to be released in 2023/24.

At least one hardware upgrade, the DualSense Edge, is already pegged for a 2023 release. It remains to be seen if PS5 Pro will accompany it. Tez2 believes that upgraded dev kits are already on their way to game studios “for sure.”

An official presentation in Poland by TV manufacturer TCL Technology suggests that the PS5 Pro will release in “2023/4.” According to a slide in the presentation, the company projects that the mid-gen PS5 console upgrade will arrive alongside a new Xbox Series S/X console too as part of what it calls console “Gen 9.5.”

What TCL expects the PS5 Pro specs will be

PS5 Pro
As revealed by Polish tech site PPE, TCL Technology expects that the PS5 Pro will be arriving within the next two years and believes that it will come with considerable hardware upgrades. The company anticipates that these mid-gen consoles will have “2160p/60-120 render” compared to the “1440p/60-120 render” for the standard PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Similarly, it believes they will have “UHD-8K/60-120 output” with the new AMD Radeon “RX7700XT GPU” compared to “UHD/60-120 output” and “RX6700XT GPU” for the current-gen consoles, though this is likely a general placeholder as to what the manufacturer expects from the upgraded hardware.

It’s unclear whether TCL is merely making projections of the next PS5 and Xbox Series X|S mid-gen upgrades, or if the company knows more about what Sony and Microsoft are planning. For now, we can safely place this near the top of the speculation folder, as TCL is one of the largest TV manufacturers in the world, so it wouldn’t be too surprising if it is privy to more confidential information on the PS5 Pro than most.

Speculation of the PS5 Pro was also sparked by an AMD job listing posted earlier this month that was looking for a System-on-Chip Verification Engineer to be part of “the team behind the chip powering Xbox, PlayStation, and the latest RDNA graphics chip.” A recent report on DigiTimes believes that Sony is asking its manufacturing partners to start production of an upgraded PS5 within the next two years as well.

In other news, Sony is reportedly fixing the PS Plus upgrade pricing for discounted users after backlash, and Dimensional Ink’s Marvel MMO has been canceled just six months after its announcement.
