Known insider Tom Henderson has said that the rumored PS5 Slim might not end up being a slimmer version of the console at all. Henderson — who first leaked the upcoming hardware revision — never suggested that it would be a thinner version of the launch model, but reports referencing “PS5 Slim” continue to persist.

PS5 Slim might end up having “just slightly different dimensions”

Henderson claims to have seen prototypes of the revised PS5, and based on what he’s seen, he thinks the new hardware will only feature “slightly different dimensions” at best. Dev kits of the new PS5 model reportedly made their way to game developers earlier this year.

As far as a release date is concerned, Henderson stands by his report that the revised PS5 will be out in September, so a reveal is expected soon. “I’m inclined to believe it will just be called a PS5 and branded as an improved model,” Henderson wrote, doubling down on his claim that the new PS5 will completely replace the launch model.

Earlier this month, PS5 consoles were discounted across Europe and a number of countries in other regions, leading to speculations that Sony was making room for the revised model.

PS5 consoles have been discounted across Europe, leading to speculations that the rumored PS5 Slim (or PS5 with detachable disc drive) will indeed launch in 2023. A revised model has been rumored for a while, but Sony has not confirmed its existence.

What we know about PS5 Slim thus far

Over on ResetEra (via PushSquare), users reported that PS5 has been discounted in the UK, Spain, Portugal, France, and Romania, among a number of other countries. A Brazilian user reported that the PS5 has been discounted in Brazil as well. It’s widely assumed that Sony’s clearing out inventory to make room for the new model.

The PS5 Slim (or whatever it’ll officially be called) was first leaked by known insider Tom Henderson, who claims that the only major change will be a detachable disc drive, making it slimmer and lighter than the launch model. The detachable disc drive reportedly won’t be compatible with PS5 digital edition. However, this may change.

In its recent court battle with the Federal Trade Commission, Microsoft also claimed that a revised PS5 is expected to launch in 2023. However, the company is probably going by media reports.

If Henderson’s report is true, we’ll likely get a reveal soon.

Microsoft seemingly knows the price range for the unannounced PS5 Slim and PS5 handheld Project Q. At least that’s the impression the company gave in a legal filing during its court battle with the Federal Trade Commission over the Activision Blizzard acquisition.

Expected price of PS5 Slim and PS5 handheld Project Q

According to Microsoft, Sony is expected to release a PS5 Slim later this year for around $399.99 and Project Q for under $300. For context, Microsoft was arguing against the FTC’s definition of console market, stating that Nintendo should not be excluded because both Xbox and PlayStation offer cheaper versions of their consoles with prices on par with the Switch. The FTC argues that Microsoft and Sony are the only two players in the high-end console market.

“Xbox Series S is sold for $50 less than the Switch OLED model,” Microsoft wrote. “PlayStation likewise sells a less expensive Digital Edition for $399.99, and is expected to release a PlayStation 5 Slim later this year at the same reduced price point.” A footnote on the same page of the document then mentions Project Q’s expected price as under $300.

Microsoft may be referring to the rumored PS5 with detachable disc drive as PS5 Slim. According to known insider Tom Henderson, the revised model is scheduled for release later this year and may replace the launch model.

The PS5 detachable disc drive that will reportedly arrive with the next generation of the console “likely won’t be compatible” with the current PlayStation 5 Digital Version, according to a report from insider Tom Henderson. If true, this would presumably limit the use of the detachable disc drive to this new batch of “PS5 Slim” consoles and awkwardly leave current owners of the disc-less PS5 with the inability to purchase it as a potential upgrade.

New PS5 models won’t have major hardware changes, either

Henderson, providing a “small update” as a tweet, also says that the new PS5 console will essentially be “gen 2” of the PS5. On the subject of the detachable hard drive, though, some users in the thread wonder what the point is if it’s not compatible with the current Digital Version of the console or that it would severely limit the sales of the device. Another believes that a move like this would actually be “anti-consumer” on Sony’s part.

Henderson also points out that the new PS5 console will not make any major hardware revisions to the original PS5 model. He shares further that he expects production of this “PS5 Slim” to begin in April and arrive in storefronts as early as September this year.

Some new PS5 hardware has been teased by Hideaki Nishino, a Sony Senior VP of Platform Experience, in an interview. From what we can decipher, it may release or be announced near the end of Fiscal Year 2023, which concludes in September 2023. This new hardware could well be the new PS5 console with the detachable hard drive, first reported in September 2022 by known insider Tom Henderson.

New PS5 hardware tease coincides with prior ‘PS5 Slim’ report

Nishino shared future plans for the PS5 platform, prompted by an observation that the PS4 Pro was released about three years after the PS4 released, in an interview with Famitsu magazine. He said:

By the end of fiscal 2022, cumulative sales will exceed 37 million units, and we believe that it will be a very important time for the platform as well. I won’t be able to talk about specifics at this time, but I hope you will look forward to next year (2023).

We believe that he means by the end of fiscal 2023, since FY 2022 is already over. From this quote alone, the safest bet is that something significant about the PS5 will be revealed in 2023.

That said, the reportedly slimmer PS5 model with a detachable hard drive also has a release window of September 2023, which is when FY 2023 ends. Another leak in November also suggests that the “PS5 Slim” release date would be Q3 2023. It’s unclear how this supposedly new PS5 will be named by Sony, whether it’s a PS5 ‘Slim’ or ‘Pro’ (or something else entirely). But at least it looks like these pieces of information are converging to a similar point.

The PS5 Slim release date will be Q3 2023, according to known insider Tom Henderson in verification of a report from TheLeak.co yesterday. An anonymous source says that the console may not have the word “Slim” in its name when it launches next year. Production of the PS5 Slim is apparently slated for Q2 2023.

PS5 Slim will have detachable disk drive, suggests insider

In the tweet above, Henderson corroborates that the report from TheLeak.co lines up with his earlier report of a new PS5 that will be arriving with a detachable disk drive in September 2023. Given the different pieces of information revealed in both articles, let’s parse the information. Sony has yet to reveal any official information on this supposed PS5 redesign, so please bear that in mind.

The PS5 Slim will reportedly use a die-shrink treatment that will make the console use less voltage, run cooler, and weigh less. It will also remove the stand used when the console is laying horizontal. Sony hopes this overall weight reduction will lower shipping and production costs.

Internally, this new PS5 has been dubbed the “D chassis PlayStation 5” as opposed to the current A, B, and C chassis models of the console. Sony anticipates producing 18.5 million units of the PS5 Slim and 12 million units of prior PS5 models.

To keep it thin, the PS5 Slim will apparently have a detachable disc drive that can be connected to the console via an additional USB-C port on the back. Buyers can choose whether to purchase the the console with or without the extra disc drive.

Update, 12:41pm: The supposed release window for the new PS5 has been changed to September 2023.

Sony will be launching a new PS5 with a detachable disc drive, according to a new site aptly named Insider Gaming by known insider Tom Henderson. According to an anonymous source sharing details of the next iteration of the console, the release date for this PlayStation 5 overhaul will be September 2023.

What the detachable disc drive would mean for the new PS5

New PS5

The source, as reported by Insider Gaming, claims that the detachable disc drive will be connected to the PS5 using an additional USB-C port along the back of the console, with the added port ostensibly being a part of the new D chassis for PS5. As such, this would replace the current A, B, and C chassis which have been in production since the console’s launch.

The new PS5 console will apparently be sold separately as well as in a bundle with the detachable disc drive, though this can be purchased separately too. The disc drive will “not ruin the aesthetics of the console and will attach to it without looking external,” suggesting that the paired drive will likely be a first-party product. It will also be portable and easily replaceable.

The report projects that that the detachable disc drive means that the new PS5 will be slimmer and lighter. If true, it could mean that this will be called the “PS5 Slim,” if just colloquially. Either way, Sony is reportedly looking to sell approximately 18.5 million units of this PlayStation 5 version in FY 2023, while only selling 12 millions units of the soon-to-be older PS5 consoles with the A, B, or C chassis within the same time frame. As such, it is assumed that Sony will be phasing them out in favor of the newly designed PS5.

In other news, Konami has posted a before-and-after screenshot comparison for the Suikoden 1 and 2 HD remaster, and Resident Evil Village DLC will conclude the Winters Family Saga.

A new report from Taiwanese business website DigiTimes (courtesy of VGC) claims that a new PS5 redesign will begin production in 2022. The DigiTimes report cites industry sources who claim that various suppliers including foundry TSMC, who makes semiconductors, are planning to start production for the PS5 redesign between the second and third quarters of 2022.

Analyst Dr. Serkan Toto says that DigiTimes has a spotty track record, but further clarifies that the reports indicate Sony is expected to move to a “new semi-customized 6nm CPU from AMD” because “5nm is said to be too costly.”

Is the PS5 Redesign a PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro?

VGC notes that the redesign seems to be focused on the internal components and most likely won’t make any big changes to the console’s outer design or aesthetics. Those waiting on a PS5 Slim will probably have to hold out just a little bit longer. Sony has typically introduced the slimmer versions of its consoles around the three-year interval. This is also not expected to be a PS5 Pro. Any potential Slim and Pro redesigns of the console aren’t expected until the end of 2023 at the earliest, if they come at all.

This particular redesign of the PS5 is most likely in an effort to surpass component shortages that have made manufacturing and supply of the next-gen console (and a number of other technologies) difficult. Recent comments from Sony indicated that they could potentially issue a redesigned PS5 to help overcome those shortages and meet the high demand, and it seems like the company could be moving forward with those plans. How the redesign may affect the console’s performance—either positively or negatively—is unknown.

It’s not just supply shortages keeping the PS5 off of shelves however. Demand for the new console has been enormous, giving it the most successful console launch everSony has already shipped nearly 8 million PS5 consoles, and the attach rate for PS5 titles is exceptionally high. With Sony having trouble even getting the current PS5 model into players’ hands only six months after release, don’t expect them to start pushing entirely new physical redesigns or a pro model just yet.

If the PS5 redesign is indeed a simple one to address component shortages, don’t expect a lot of big fanfare around it. Previous PlayStation consoles have had small changes to their model numbers that went mostly unnoticed by the general consumer. Product redesigns like this are common when changing component suppliers or make very small lateral changes to internal parts that make the new design notably different from the old one.
