PS5 Slim might end up having “just slightly different dimensions”

Henderson claims to have seen prototypes of the revised PS5, and based on what he’s seen, he thinks the new hardware will only feature “slightly different dimensions” at best. Dev kits of the new PS5 model reportedly made their way to game developers earlier this year.

As far as a release date is concerned, Henderson stands by his report that the revised PS5 will be out in September, so a reveal is expected soon. “I’m inclined to believe it will just be called a PS5 and branded as an improved model,” Henderson wrote, doubling down on his claim that the new PS5 will completely replace the launch model.

Earlier this month, PS5 consoles were discounted across Europe and a number of countries in other regions, leading to speculations that Sony was making room for the revised model.

Leaving the Switch and Xbox behind

The figure comes from the latest data from GSD, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz, which shows that 15.5 million games were sold in Europe for the month of June, a 20% increase when compared to last year’s numbers.

Perhaps the most interesting statistic is that sales of the PS5 were up the aforementioned 116%, while the Xbox Series X|S is “basically flat,” with sales down 0.8%.

On top of that, the Nintendo Switch saw a decrease in sales across Europe, with the numbers down -2.3%, which is perhaps surprising given the enormous success of Legends of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which was released in May.

The games themselves also did pretty well in June, especially on the PlayStation 5, with the console accounting for 21% for sales of Diablo 4 (while just under 9% for Xbox) and 65% for F1 23 (22.5% on Xbox, 0.3% on PC). Meanwhile, half the sales for Street Fighter 6 went to Sony’s machine.

As of now, the PS5 appears to be the head honcho in the European console market. While just over 500,000 systems were sold in June, Xbox’s biggest rival looks like it’s doing pretty well at the minute, especially given that huge spike in sales.

Sony adds more blessed stability to PS5 and PS4 via system update

The minor updates come with the good ol’ trademark patch note:

As usual, there’s a chance players will notice a change (or two) in due course, so we’ll keep our readers posted.

PS4 version 10.70 comes over four months after a major update. Version 10.50 was released in early March, allowing players to access authorized third-party apps and services via Settings. March’s update also improved the last-gen console’s compatibility with the PS App.

The PS5 hasn’t had a major update since March either, but did receive minor stability and improvement patches over the months. Sony’s VP of Product Management Hiromi Wakai said back in March that her team will continue to work on new features. “We are always thinking about the features that our fans might want to see and ways to make their gaming experiences on PS5 more fun, social, and connected,” she said.

While there are no standout AAA games, the highlights are Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes – Definitive Edition, a remake of the 2011 PS3 game, and tactical historical sim NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION: Awakening. Otherwise, some people may be lucky enough to take part in the Tekken 8 Closed Network Test instead, which is due to start on July 21. Registration for the beta has already closed, though.

Lunar Lander Beyond from Dreams Uncorporated lands in 2024

Lunar Lander Beyond is a complete reimagining of the simple platforming game that first hit arcades all the way back in 1979. Developed by Dreams Uncorporated (Cris Tales), this new game features a full story that Atari lovingly detailed during its reveal this week.

As a newly appointed captain of the Pegasus corporation, you must guide a roster of colorful pilots, eclectic advisors and state-of-the-art landers through a taxing series of missions. Deliver cargo, retrieve resources, and rescue stranded pilots as you navigate a mysterious universe of moons and planets.

The surreal visuals seen in Beyond’s trailer represent the illusory visions the pilots see as they delve further and further into space, landing on more and more distant moons as the game goes on. By the end, there is talk of celestial pink elephants, which is certainly something beyond the capabilities of vintage vector graphics.

While we haven’t yet seen what Lunar Lander’s gameplay looks like in this latest reinterpretation, the developer’s distinct visual style may just give it a leg up on the many retro remakes on the market.

Lunar Lander Beyond will touch down on PlayStation 4 and 5 in the first half of 2024. These versions will join releases on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One/Series X, and Atari’s own VCS platform.

Diablo 4 was nearly the best-selling game on PS5 and PS4 on both charts

According to Sony’s chart, Diablo 4 was the best-selling PS5 game on PSN in both the United States and Canada (which are paired together) and Europe during June 2023. While it was also the best-selling game on PS4 in the U.S. and Canada, it didn’t quite manage a clean sweep. The game only managed to get third place on PS4 in Europe behind Minecraft and FIFA 23. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise bearing in mind it made $600 million in its first five days of release.

Final Fantasy 16 came in a solid second place on PS5 in both regions. The game wasn’t released on PS4. However, this is a high performance since the game released on June 22 and only had nine days to claim its spot. FF16 has since become the fastest-selling PS5 exclusive. On the contrary, Diablo 4 had more than three weeks to notch up its sales after it was released on June 5.

Other new games to enter the top PS5 downloads chart include Street Fighter 6 (#3 in U.S./Canada, #6 in Europe) and AEW: Fight Forever (#12 in U.S./Canada). The former also made an appearance at #11 on the PS4 chart for U.S./Canada, but neither managed to chart in Europe.

Elsewhere, Beat Saber continues to dominate the new PSVR2 chart, although it is replaced by Creed: Rise to Glory – Championship Edition on the original PSVR headset. Fortnite, unsurprisingly, remains the most popular free-to-play game on PS5 and PS4.

Alternatively, both Rain World and Naraka: Bladepoint will be making their debut on PS5 this week, the latter of which will be free-to-play.

What we know about PS5 Slim thus far

Over on ResetEra (via PushSquare), users reported that PS5 has been discounted in the UK, Spain, Portugal, France, and Romania, among a number of other countries. A Brazilian user reported that the PS5 has been discounted in Brazil as well. It’s widely assumed that Sony’s clearing out inventory to make room for the new model.

The PS5 Slim (or whatever it’ll officially be called) was first leaked by known insider Tom Henderson, who claims that the only major change will be a detachable disc drive, making it slimmer and lighter than the launch model. The detachable disc drive reportedly won’t be compatible with PS5 digital edition. However, this may change.

In its recent court battle with the Federal Trade Commission, Microsoft also claimed that a revised PS5 is expected to launch in 2023. However, the company is probably going by media reports.

If Henderson’s report is true, we’ll likely get a reveal soon.

When does the Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising open beta start?

The Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising open beta test dates have been set, and will run from July 28-30 for PS4 and PS5. Arc System Works will also be selecting a random group of applicants to give early access to, with the early access dates for the beta happening on July 26 and July 27, 2023.

Even though the beta will be open for players, registration for ealry access will be available beginning on July 5 and running through July 16.

Alongside news of the open beta, Arc System Works also confirmed that Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising will be holding an open beta tournament at the EVO 2023 fighting game tournament. EVO 2023 is set to take place from August 4-5, 2023, and will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is a sequel to Granblue Fantasy Versus, and will include a handful of new mechanics to the game, including Dash Attacks, Triple Attacks, and more when it releases later this year.
