Smith and Mackie went up against each other in the PS4 port of the 2001 PS2 game Twisted Metal: Black. Beatriz, while briefly shown with a controller, mainly commented on the side. She even wryly pointed out how different Mackie looks from his character in the game, John Doe.

There were only a few moments that showed the actual game, as it was mostly about the three talking about shooting the show, video games, and their memories from the early 2000s. Mackie said he didn’t play too many video games growing up, but he said he played some Atari systems back then. He also noted that it was a “big deal” when anyone got a PlayStation.

Miller said he wanted the apocalypse in the series to happen in 2002 since that’s near the era when these games came out, which were “synonymous with the time.” Mackie said he even got his first car around 2002 and loved playing his music while driving, which is also what his character does in the series.

Twisted Metal is about to have a presence at Comic-Con that not only includes free ice cream from Sweet Tooth’s truck, but also a screening of the first episode before its July 27 premiere date.

Sweet Tooth’s ice cream truck will have free desserts

Peacock announced that Sweet Tooth’s truck will, while supplies last, be giving out free servings of Salt & Straw’s exclusive (and undefined) Twisted Metal flavor fittingly called “Sweet Tooth.” Attendees, in addition to being treated with ice cream, will also be treated to a surprise musical performance. The ice cream truck is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. PT, while the musical show is slated for around 5 p.m. PT. Both will be at the corner of J Street and First Ave., which is right down the street from the convention.

The ice cream portion of Twisted Metal’s Comic-Con appearance won’t just be limited to the event, as Sweet Tooth and the truck are visiting Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Des Moines, and Chicago just after the event. The Sony Pictures TV Instagram account will have more exact times and dates in the near future. This flavor can also be purchased at three Salt & Straw locations in San Diego while supplies last.

Comic-Con will have a screening of the first episode at 10 p.m. PT in room 6DE, too. Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller is hosting the screening along with a Twisted Metal-inspired version of Kinda Funny’s game show Kinda Feudy where audience members will have their knowledge of the car combat series tested. The panel will also have “twists, turns, and surprise giveaways.”

Twisted Metal was released in 1995 for the PS1 and its sequel hit shelves the following year. Both were regarded quite well and are among the most fondly remembered PS1 games. Gravity Crash Portable, on the other hand, is a neon-soaked, retro-inspired multi-directional shooter that came to the PSP in 2010. It was a portable version of the PS3 version that hit PSN the year prior.

The latest Twisted Metal trailer shows more of the cast

This explicit trailer is a little longer than the divisive clip from Summer Game Fest and also features more than one scene. This trailer gives a look at the characters portrayed by Stephanie Beatriz, Neve Campbell, and Thomas Haden Church, as well as more Sweet Tooth, who is being played by both Samoa Joe and Will Arnett, and Anthony Mackie’s John Doe.

Sony is also said to be working on a Twisted Metal game. It has yet to be announced, but reports have pointed to Firesprite being the team behind it.

The show is coming from Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who will also be executive producing. It was written by Cobra Kai scribe Michael Jonathan Smith, who also served as an EP. Other executive producers include PlayStation Studios’ Hermen Hulst, Qizilbash and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions, Inspire Entertainment’s Jason Spire, Electric Avenue’s Will Arnett and Marc Forman, and Peter Principato of Artists First. Bad Trip director Kitao Sakurai is also executive producing and directing a couple episodes.

Twisted Metal fans like Sweet Tooth, dislike light-hearted tone

Let’s go through the positives first. Some users on Twitter reacting to the teaser trailer like the cameo for Sweet Tooth at the end, particularly with the villain being played by Samoa Joe from AEW Wrestling. Some point to Sweet Tooth’s truck and his costume to be authentic to the games.

Others are less than thrilled with the tone of the teaser trailer. Using Len’s “Steal My Sunshine” feels too light-hearted, some say, for a series about heavy-metal vehicular combat with missiles and over-the-top explosions. Fans want a darker undertone and a grittier style from the show.

Some are annoyed that the trailer was only 45 seconds long, though that’s on the longer side for most teaser trailers. Others want a Twisted Metal game rather than a show, but one could already be in the works. (The show could just be a serious marketing campaign for a reboot.)

It’s a bit of a bummer, though, that the show will only be available on Peacock, which isn’t a streaming service that’s particularly popular, unless you follow the WWE. Hopefully, the viewing numbers for this adaptation won’t be hamstrung too much by the distribution model.

Twisted Metal TV poster revealed, trailer drops tomorrow

A poster for the TV show has been revealed as well, with the iconic Sweet Tooth ice cream truck just hanging out in the background. According to IGN, a teaser trailer for the series will apparently appear tomorrow, April 28 (the article originally stated that it would arrive later today).

The TV series will also cast Joel Seanoa (otherwise known as Samoa Joe from AEW Wrestling), Will Arnett, and Thomas Haden Church. The show is based on an original take on the Twisted Metal brand by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool, Zombieland) and written by Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai).

A new Twisted Metal game, rumored to be in development by Firesprite Studios, may be coming to PSVR 2 and PC according to a job listing in February. We expect an official announcement for the next Twisted Metal quite soon.

Job listing hints Twisted Metal reboot could come to PSVR 2 and PC

A job listing from Firesprite Studios, the developer currently rumored to be working on the Twisted Metal reboot, has surfaced that suggests a possible PSVR 2 mode or release for the game, along with a PC release.

Firesprite is currently hiring for a Principal Physics Programmer – Multiplayer Action, which could refer directly to the Twisted Metal reboot. The job listing also seems to hint heavily at PSVR 2 compatibility and a day-one PC launch, with the job listing stating that ‘experience developing gameplay for VR would be useful’ and ‘knowledge of a range of game services such as Steam and PSN back ends’ is important.

The same job listing also describes the game, saying that it’ll feature a ‘blending genre-transcending gameplay mechanics around vehicular and on foot combat,’ heavily fuelling the idea that this could indeed be Twisted Metal.

It was early last year that VGC reported that Firesprite Studio had taken over development on a Twisted Metal reboot, but since that report, we’ve not heard anything about the game. There’s been no official announcement and no real talk from the studio on whether this report is true.

The last game in the Twisted Metal series was also a reboot, released in 2012 exclusively for the PlayStation 3. The game received mostly positive reviews, but for unknown reasons, Sony chose to not make any more games in the series, perhaps due to underwhelming sales.

Scriptwriter Michael Jonathan took to Twitter with the news that shooting had wrapped on the first season of Twisted Metal. He celebrated the work of the cast and crew’s work with these words:

The cast and crew of Twisted Metal was something special. Even with lightning delays, extreme heat, and cars that wouldn’t do as they’re told, everyone worked as hard as they could to make sure Twisted Metal kicked as much as possible.

The last day of shooting felt like the last day of camp, with lots of laughs, a few tears, and ice cream being handed out the back of Sweet Tooth’s truck. We all cannot wait for you to see this insane thing we spent our summer shooting. Now, to post!

We haven’t seen a series reveal yet, but the mention of cars has us hoping we’ll see some practical effects. Unfortunately, we’ve seen some pretty terrible video game adaptations lately. Hopefully, this one will be the exception to the rule.

Despite the upcoming series, there have been no hints pointing to a new Twisted Metal game. The last title in the franchise, the 2012 reboot, was fairly popular, but the studio that produced it, Eat Sleep Play, shut down in 2017. Additionally, series creator David Jaffe is no longer associated with Sony.

So, while the franchise has a future, it’s still very uncertain. Vehicular combat games fell out of vogue long ago, and they’ve never managed to make a big comeback. Maybe this TV series will rekindle interest and usher in a renaissance.

In other news, Bloodborne is going down for maintenance soon, and Koei Tecmo is rumored to be teaming up with EA for a new game.

What Raven might be like in the Twisted Metal show

Campbell will appear as Raven in a recurring guest star role, according to Variety. It’s not yet known how close this interpretation of Raven will be to her counterpart in the video game series, or whether she will be aiding or stopping John Doe from delivering a dangerous package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

In Twisted Metal: Black, Raven is a gothic teenager who is falsely blamed for the death of her best friend Kelly and ends up in Blackfield Asylum. Determined to avenge her, she joins the vehicular contest with the hope of winning and then exacting justice on the two high school boys who were actually responsible for the murder. If the TV adaptation takes several cues from Twisted Metal: Lost, we might see Raven driving a hearse and using voodoo dolls to protect people from killers.

Announced in late February of this year, the Twisted Metal Peacock series will be produced by Sony Pictures TV, PlayStation Productions, and Universal Television. Michael Jonathan, the writer for the successful Netflix show Cobra Kai, will be a writer and showrunner for the adaptation. The show will also cast Stephanie Beatriz as a trigger-happy car thief named Beatriz who helps Doe against the marauders attempting to kill him, and Thomas Haden Church as a ruthless highway patrolman named Agent Stone who enforces the rules of the road.

This TV show coincides with the Twisted Metal reboot which was rumored to be in development by Lucid Games but was apparently changed to Firesprite.

In other news, the PS1 classic trophy lists for PS4 and PS5 have hit PSN early, and the Uncharted movie has surpassed $400 million in box office sales.

Who’s starring in the Twisted Metal TV show?

Anthony Mackie will star as John Doe, a milkman that has no idea who he is or from whence he came. The half-hour comedy will put Doe against marauders and psychopaths as he tries to escape the hellscape for something better. Familiar faces might show up along the way, including a certain ice cream truck driving clown.

Cobra Kai writer Michael Jonathan will be the showrunner and server as writer on the series. The casting for other roles hasn’t been revealed yet, and release timing hasn’t been discussed either.

Opinion: Make a new game

The video game industry collectively shot its wad concerning vehicular combat in the late 1990s and early 2000s. We just don’t see many games in the genre anymore. That’s not to say a new Twisted Metal game would do poorly, though. On the contrary, people were excited about Destruction AllStars because they hoped for a spiritual successor to Twisted Metal. Unfortunately, it wasn’t what people hoped, mainly because it lacked character (and had invasive microtransactions). A well-crafted Twisted Metal game could single-handedly revive this style of game and satisfy a fanbase that’s been asking for a new title for years.
