After only saying it was coming in summer, the early access start date has been narrowed down for the online action RPG Wayfinder. Early Access Founder’s Season 1 will begin on August 15 and will let players access six different Lost Zones and six different characters, although the Venomess hero will be hidden behind the game’s battle pass.

How the Wayfinder early access Battle Pass works

The Wayfinder battle pass is called a Reward Tower. As is the case with other battle passes, there will be free and premium tracks, with each of the four Founder’s Packs giving varying degrees of access. As players gain XP, they’ll earn Reward Tower Keys that will unlock over 100 unique items over the different tower floors.

The main way the Reward Towers are different from conventional battle passes is that the premium track will never expire. Once a player has purchased the premium track, they can work on it at their own pace. There’s even the opportunity to gain progress on multiple premium tracks; only one can be active at any one time but players can switch freely between them. However, the free tracks will expire at the end of each season.

The Season 1 Reward Tower will have three tracks. The bronze Free Reward Tower offers 25 rewards and one of the components needed to summon the Venomess (the others can be earned through gameplay). The silver Paid Reward Tower gives access to all 100 rewards and all four components for the Venomess. Finally, the gold Premium Reward Tower offers all 100 rewards, instant access to the Venomess and her Nightshade signature weapon, and 20 Reward Tower Keys for a head start.

There will be four Founder’s Packs available at the start of the first season of early access. All will give players a Founders’ Flag Profile Background, Founder’s Glyph Pack, and “Wayfounder” Title and Profile Glyph. Here’s a list of the other bonuses players will get:

Developer Digital Extremes has finally announced Warframe PS5 crossplay after nine years since the launch of the game. PS5 and PS4 players will now be able to play missions with those on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and even Nintendo Switch. While cross-platform play has been enabled, though, cross save functionality is still in development.

Warframe cross progression release date remains unknown

According to the official FAQ on the game’s website, Warframe cross saves and cross progression “will be added at a later date once the full suite of Cross Platform Play features have been established.” It’s a good idea really, since the developer should ensure that the servers can handle the new load for cross-platform play before adding cross progression. Digital Extremes promises to keep the community updated on cross-platform saves as cross-play development and testing continues.

To enable (or disable) cross-play, you can toggle the setting for it in the Options menu. Turning it on of course will let you join another person’s squad on another platform and find them through Public Matchmaking. Players across platforms can chat and meet in Relays and Dojos, though you’ll currently need to form a squad within the Dojo for it to work. To make cross-play easier, an icon noting your chosen platform will be displayed next to your username, in addition to numeric suffixes that will help identify players with the same name across platforms.

Even today, we still recommend playing Warframe despite it releasing almost a decade ago, with us giving the PS5 version of the game a stellar 9/10 in our review.

Warframe developer Digital Extremes surprised fans over the weekend with the announcement of a new free-to-play action MMORPG Soulframe, which is inspired by the likes of Princess Mononoke and The NeverEnding Story. The developer unveiled an impressive cinematic trailer at TennoCon 2022, and gave fans a chance to reserve their in-game name ahead of release.

How to reserve your Soulframe name

soulframe puzzle solution

Visit Soulframe’s official website to solve a little puzzle. The phrase Envoys of Ode Sky has to be translated into symbols to turn a key, which is simple enough since some of the symbols are already plastered above their corresponding character. But in case you get stuck, simply use the image above. The second line of symbols is what you’re going to need to replicate on the website. Once through, it’s all simple: enter your email and pick an in-game name to reserve. Don’t forget to check out the impressive cinematic reveal below!

So what’s Soulframe all about? According to Digital Extremes, Soulframe is “heavily influenced by themes of nature, restoration, and exploration.” It’s a brand-new IP, but one that’s set in the “mirror universe version of Warframe” in a fantasy setting.

Creative director Geoff Crookes released the following statement in a press release:

With Soulframe‘s worldbuilding and thematic elements, we are really looking to go back to our childhood favorites and pull inspiration from the elaborate fantasy worlds that we fell in love with growing up. Our team is really interested in this idea of nature and humanity colliding and we’ll be exploring a lot of those themes through our own lens while playing with ideas of restoration and exploration.

Soulframe is in early development and its platforms have yet to be announced.

In other news, MLB The Show 22 now has a four-hour PS Plus Premium game trial, and God of War Ragnarok’s official artbook cover contains a spoiler so avoid it if you can!

The Russian attacks on the Ukraine have caused widespread condemnation around the world. The sentiment within the gaming community is no different as many remain concerned for their friends and family at studios based within the country. To help with Ukraine war relief efforts, Bungie, CD Projekt and 11 bit studios are amongst several studios to have made a donation to organizations seeking to help those in need.

An uncertain future

There are many studios based within Ukraine, all of which face an uncertain future at the moment. These include GSC Game World (S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2), Frogwares (Sherlock Holmes, The Sinking City), Vostok Games (Fear The Wolves), Sengi Games (upcoming PS5 title The Serpent Rogue), Crytek Kyiv (Warface), and Ubisoft Kyiv and Odesa (Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon support). Several of these studios are looking at potential relocations, following in the footsteps of 4A Games (Metro franchise) who relocated to Malta following violence within the Ukraine in 2014.

Many have released statements calling for people not to ignore their plight. GSC Game World asked the gaming industry to “not stand aside and help those in need”, as well as to consider supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine through a special aid account. Others, like Crytek and Ubisoft, have been offering their support to their studios who have been affected.

Other studios around the world have been doing their best to help with the relief efforts that are heading towards the region. Bungie is donating 100% of the proceeds of the first 48 hours of their Game2Give drive to the Ukraine humanitarian aid efforts. CD PROJEKT Group has donated 1 million PLN to Polska Akcja Humanitarna, a Polish humanitarian organization who is currently in the Ukraine. 11 bit studios is donating all profits from This War of Mine and its DLC to the Ukranian Red Cross, while Raw Fury will also be donating to the same charity. Digital Extremes has donated $100,000 to the Canadian Red Cross for their part in humanitarian aid efforts in Ukraine too. Many other studios have directed people towards an information site on the Russian-Ukraine war that includes many donation links for those who wish to help.

It’s 2021, almost 2022, and that pesky COVID-19 pandemic is still putting a damper on in-person events. Still, Digital Extremes has been busy working on their ever popular (and free) game Warframe, and invited us to a special hands-off virtual demo of their latest upcoming expansion, The New War. Rebecca Ford, otherwise known formally as the Director of Community and Live Operations at Digital Extremes, and also the voice actress behind The Lotus, guided us through some new sections of the forthcoming expansion, and we have a preview ready for you below.

Warframe: The New War Preview – Perhaps a Finale

So, what’s new this time? The main attraction is in the title, The New War. This is a brand-new cinematic quest, something Digital Extremes has released plenty of in the past. When asked during the demo, Rebecca stated it took her approximately four hours to complete, and she knows exactly what to do. This story takes place over three acts, which will apparently resolve some storylines that began as far back as 2015. This includes the Lotus, Erra, and Ballas. Not familiar with these characters? Well, you will be by the time you finish the 14 quests required to play the new content. Yes, this campaign has a lot of quests that are required to complete before you can even begin The New War. The payoff should be worth it, though, for veterans of Warframe who have been waiting patiently these past several years to see what is to become of the Lotus and the rest of the key characters.

There are also new playable characters who are neither a Warframe nor the player character Operator. The story involves three factions forming a shaky alliance in order to bring down the much larger threat that the Sentients pose. Thus, Tenshin from the Tenno clan, Kahl-175 from the Grineer, and Veso from Corpus Tech are all playable during key chapters in the campaign. This will be a first for players controlling anyone other than their Operator or equipped Warframe, and it will be interesting to see how the feel of gameplay adapts to these new characters.

Beyond the new campaign, a new Warframe will launch alongside the expansion. Named Caliban, he is actually a hybrid of Warframe and Sentient technology. Design wise, he has a huge, bright, animated energy core and appears to be split right down its middle. Caliban has a passive ability that automatically grants resistance to whatever damage types they are currently being inflicted with, for as long as Caliban can take incoming fire. His active abilities can be combined to float enemies helplessly in mid-air, perform a deadly spin attack that deals extra damage to those floating, a tri-beam that inflicts a ton of damage, and he can also summon up to three Conculyst allies to fight for him. Personally, I always hated fighting Conculysts, so it will feel great to be able to summon some as allies for a change. As usual, while Caliban can be purchased using Warframe’s in-game currency known as Platinum, he can also be earned for free by players who are willing to put in the time to grind out the necessary resources. As usual, expect to play for dozens of hours in order to create the Warframe in this way.

Warframe: The New War Preview – Primed and Ready

Finally, the Prime Vault is being refreshed with The New War. Harrow Prime will be available for purchase, along with Prime versions of their weapons and accessories. While this content is unvaulted, players can either – you guessed it – purchase or earn these souped-up weapons and the Warframe. This is in addition to the ongoing Prime Resurgence event, which is offering up a limited amount of time to purchase or earn other Prime Warframes and related gear on a rotating basis.

This upcoming expansion for Warframe may have a lot of end-game content, but there is no rush to get to this stuff put upon the player. All requisite quests remain playable for all players, with no shortcut or item to purchase to unlock The New War. So, although the play time of the latest quest is estimated to be at least four hours, this is in addition to the 30+ hours most players will spend fulfilling all of the requirements to play it. At that point, most players will be invested enough to want to see it through to the end, especially with what happens to the game’s guide, The Lotus.

Warframe: The New War Preview – Are You Ready, Tenno?

As a long-time player of Warframe, I am excited to see some closure for a story that I began a whole console generation ago. It’s been fun following and reporting on a quick-paced, free game that I have spent hundreds of hours playing with my family. Sure, this expansion may not have a new open-world expansion which may be easier to point to and say “look, new stuff!” But it shows that Digital Extremes has been busy working to satisfy those of us who want to know what the ultimate fate of Space Mom and others will be, and not within a short quest but a full-on experience. As for new players, this content will presumably always be available should they opt to invest the time, which can’t be said for other free-to-play games after all.

Consistently near the top of the most-played games on Steam (the PSN has no comparable metric by which to use), Warframe is the game that keeps on giving. The New War launches on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, and even the Nintendo Switch, on December 15, 2021. This time around, with completely different playable characters, and the lengthiest single-player cinematic campaign to date, long-time players have a big reason to jump back in, while new players have the promise of that much more to see and do if they only invest the time. Note that we only said time, and not time and money – after all, Ninjas Play Free.

PlayStation LifeStyle would like to thank Digital Extremes for their time and resources during their digital presentation.

Warframe developer and publisher Digital Extremes has announced cross-play, cross-save, and a new expansion for the free-to-play title.

Titled The New War, the expansion as well as the aforementioned features will launch sometime in 2021. Digital Extremes has promised a simultaneous launch on all platforms including the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

“Community is incredibly important to us and opening up cross-play and cross-save is just one of many more efforts we’ll take on to bring more players together including extending Warframe’s fast, fluid, action combat experience to other global gaming platforms,” Digital Extremes’ CEO, Sheldon Carter, said in a press release. “We are at the very beginning of the next-generation of Warframe. We are eight years young and have the benefit of beginning our second console generation with a major game expansion that will also mark a new chapter of more story-based content our players have been asking for.”

You can watch a 30-minute gameplay demo of The New War below. The expansion will star Corpus Engineer Veso, Grineer Soldier Kahl-175, Dax warrior Teshin – all three of whom will be playable in a quest for the first time ever.

An official description of The New War reads:

Prepare yourself, Tenno. The New War is coming, and no one is safe. Old enemies have returned to the Origin System… will the factions unite against Ballas, Erra and the advancing Sentients, or buckle under the weight of a full-scale invasion?

We’ll update our readers when a release date for the expansion and new features is announced.

The latest Warframe update titled Sisters of Parvos is now live, and includes an expanded storyline as well as a new comic book collection quest, Corpus Lich system with weapon rewards, and a new Warframe named Yareli. Players can acquire these rewards by fighting against the Corpus forces and saving the Ventkids of Fortuna, as well as participating in a whole new series of challenges.

The update revolves around the threatening Parvos Granum and Corpus Corporation. As revealed in the update’s title, Parvos has created a series of “sisters” fitted with Corpus weapons and companions called the “Sister’s Hounds”. Players can encounter these new enemies through the Corpus Lich System, unlockable after the completion of The War Within and Call of Tempestarii quests.

While there are a few prerequisites that need to be met before taking on these new enemies, Digital Extremes has also added a new Warframe named Yareli, which it states is “one of the most accessible new Warframes” in the game. She can attack enemies with blades of ice and powerful geysers, and even has her own aquatic-themed version of the K-Drive. Yareli is also the main character in the new comic book, which players can unlock after completing a variety of K-Drive challenges in the Orb Vallis.

Below is a list of the Sisters of Parvos update’s main changes and additions:

Warframe Sisters of Parvos Update

  • New Corpus Lich System with Weapon Rewards
  • Kuva Lich System Enhancements with New Battles and Rewards

Warframe may have been a PC-centric game when it launched, but it became a popular free-to-play hit on console at the PS4’s launch. It has further expanded its capabilities with a next-gen version that launched when the latest generation of consoles did as well. Which features of the PlayStation 5 did Digital Extremes opt to use, and to what effect? Our Warframe PS5 review dives in

Warframe PS5 Review – Amped Visuals

On the PS4, Warframe certainly ran well, but the console showed its age throughout the years. As Digital Extremes piled on more campaigns, more content, and more complexity to their game, Warframe quickly grew in size, and had load times to match. Vast, open landscapes such as the Plains of Eidolon, Orb Vallis, or Cambion Drift take 45 seconds or more to load on the PS4. Here, on the PS5, that is cut down to ten seconds or less. Smaller, traditional levels now load in just a few seconds. Once again, the PS5’s NVMe shines, and Warframe feels better for it.

The PS5 boasts a lot more graphical power than the last generation of consoles, and Warframe on the PS5 is basically equivalent to running the game on high, in 4K, and with a targeted frame rate of 60 that is usually hit. There’s a lot of organic flesh-meets-metal and sci-fi technology that renders crisply A freshly-released rendering engine update from Digital Extremes has enabled more realistic lighting, though it is not using real-time ray tracing. Whatever it is using, the lighting is fantastic and believable. Missions like to throw dozens of enemies onscreen at a time, and the PS5 handles this without breaking a sweat. The only areas that show any slowdown seem to be the open-world maps mentioned previously, though any such slowness is short-lived.

The new DualSense controller has some impressive adaptive triggers, though like many controller features of the past, it does risk becoming gimmicky if only first-party Sony studios opt to utilize the functionality. Thankfully, Digital Extremes have taken great advantage of the controller. With so many varied weapons available, each of them affects the controller’s triggers as you’d expect. Pistols are easy to pull the trigger on, while fully automatic weapons have a kickback felt both in the adaptive trigger and via haptic feedback vibrations. There are more plans in the works, such as utilizing the voice coil actuators in the DualSense to simulate how it feels to walk (or glide, or slide, or flip…) through the varied environments found throughout Warframe, so that will be an interesting space to watch. As it stands now, though, the intense vibrations and convincing trigger adaptations are impressive and add to how this action looter shooter simply feels to play.

Warframe PS5 Review – Balancing Act

Since the last time we properly reviewed Warframe, a lot has happened to this freemium title. There have been no fewer than nine expansions, including cinematic solo adventures for players to go on. The universe the Tenno find themselves in is a dark, foreboding place, and the lore has been expanded to reflect this fact. Three open-world areas with side quests, multiple crafting systems, and even something called a Railjack which turns the game into a space flight combat simulator, are but some of the new elements introduced into Warframe since it launched a whole console generation ago.

Whereas before Warframe consisted of randomly-generated levels stitched together, now there are a plethora of mission types and locations to choose from. The game really has come into its own when considering its content, and players can easily sink hundreds of hours into it without things getting too repetitive. Sure, some of the mission types are similar, and there isn’t a ton of variety in enemies, but things are varied enough that most missions don’t feel like simple rehashes of earlier content.

Free-to-play games have to strike a balance between allowing players to obtain everything in the game without plopping down cold, hard cash, and letting players simply pay to win. Warframe appears to manage to keep this balance intact. Every single item on offer for Platinum, the game’s premium currency, can be grinded out and created by the player without spending any money. Even color palettes, a customization item which other games have no qualms about locking behind a paywall, can be unlocked by playing during certain events, or visiting a certain vendor.

Warframe PS5 Review – Modification Rules the Nation

The titular Warframes which players control have four or more abilities each, and those abilities must be unlocked by completing missions and leveling up. Thus, simply purchasing a Warframe for platinum is not enough – players must still master the Warframes, weapons, companions, and vehicles. All this equipment can have their stats modified by applying various mods which can be dropped by fallen enemies, found in lockers or containers randomly within a level, received as a mission reward, or even purchased in some bundles.

As items are ranked up, the maximum number of mods which can be equipped increases via an energy pool. Mods are represented as cards with an energy cost, which slot into one of at least eight slots in each piece of equipment. Mods can also be leveled up separately from equipment with an in-game resource called Endo. While some mods keep things simple such as boosting a weapon’s damage, others cause effects on enemies, such as electricity, toxic effects, or dealing extra damage against certain types of enemies. These effects can be mixed together, which means you can wield a katana which simultaneously shocks, poisons, freezes, and punctures an enemy for an extra kind of hurt.

Once an item has reached the hard-coded maximum rank of 30, some options open up such as adding a polarity to a mod slot. Each mod has a polarity indicated by a symbol in its upper-right, and slotting a mod into a matching slot on equipment allows it to be equipped for half of the energy cost. Adding this polarity to a mod slot results in the equipment having its level reset to zero, which means it now deals base damage and has a lot less energy available for mods, but ranking the item back up will result in better stats owing to the increased energy savings generated by the polarized mod slot.

This system is one of the oldest parts of Warframe, and it is well thought-out and robust, while also allowing for players who’d rather not bother with tinkering to click an auto-apply button to get on with the rest of the game. That being said, it is easy to spend several hours messing with loadouts, applying polarization, and heading back out to level up a weapon for yet another round of mastery. Watching those damage numbers reach dozens or perhaps even hundreds of thousands of points is rewarding.

One issue that still rears its head at players from time to time is crossplay. While Warframe may be available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and even the Switch, unfortunately the only form of cross-platform play available is cross-generation within the same platform family, i.e. PS4 and PS5 gamers can play together, as can XBO/XBSX players, but none can intermix across platforms. Progress can also only be transferred cross-generation, which is a shame for PC players who may have wanted to try the game out on a next-generation console without starting over again or continuing from a very old, barely-used console account. Crossplay and cross-save are two things that seem to be more prevalent as the video game industry matures, and Digital Extremes has not completely ruled things out in this regard, but for now the restrictions in place are unfortunate.

Warframe PS5 review

Warframe has now successfully launched on two PlayStation consoles in a row, and both times as a launch title. Once again, this is the place to play if you don’t have a PC that can play the game at high settings. The PS5 is also the only place to play where haptic feedback plays into how the game feels. This helps to cement the DualSense controller as less of a gimmick and more of an accessory that enhances gameplay. Even without those enhancements, though, Warframe on the PS5 is a showcase-worthy action game that every console owner has truly free access to. Ninjas play free, after all!

Digital Extremes recently teased its plans to bring Warframe to PlayStation 5 later this year. However, the bullet-jumping shooter will make the leap to next-gen sooner than expected. PS5 players can begin exploring the world of Warframe later this week on November 26th.

When the free-t0-play shooter hits PS5, it will do so on the back of a brand-new graphics engine. As a result, players should anticipate a fair share of next-gen enhancements. On PS5, Warframe will run 4K resolution at up to 60 frames per second, Digital Extremes’ COO Sheldon Carter noted in a PS Blog post. The studio also promises a seamless transition between PS4 and PS5, meaning each player’s progression, profile, and save data will make the generational leap. The two consoles will additionally communicate in terms of cross-gen multiplayer.

Players who dive into Warframe on Sony’s recently released hardware will have access to every bit of the game’s seven-year history. Such content includes each of the title’s three open worlds and all 44 previously released Warframes. Thanks to the power of next-gen, the open worlds will load faster than ever. As such, long wait times are now a thing of the past.

At present, the crew at Digital Extremes is hard at work on developing fresh content. The studio hasn’t shared too many details, but Carter did tease The Duviri Paradox, a new open world, will take advantage of the latest hardware. Warframe fans can expect the new locale to go live on an unspecified date in 2021.

Warframe jumps to Sony’s new hardware later in the week on November 26th.
