Both the controller and the cover were made available for pre-order early in the morning today, May 4, 2023, so a lot of places that offered them are already sold out. So we’ve scoured the internet for storefronts that still have the FF16 PS5 controller and cover available, and here’s what we’ve found so far.

Can you pre-order the FF16 PS5 controller in the US?

Yes, you can! One retailer that is still taking pre-orders for the FF16 PS5 controller and cover is AitaiKuji.com, at least at the time of this writing.

The retailer has the Final Fantasy 16 PS5 controller available for ¥18,500 (or $141.22 USD). Furthermore, the Final Fantasy 16 PS5 Japan Digital Edition cover can be pre-ordered for ¥16,500 (or $125.95 USD), while the Disc Edition cover is a bit pricier at ¥18,500 (or $141.22 USD). Both items say they have a release date of June 2023, though it will mostly likely be June 22, 2023 (or around then) as that’s when FF16 officially releases.

Several other outlets are already sold out of the FF16 PS5 controller and cover. In particular, Amazon Japan has run out of stock, though what looks to be a third-party seller on the site is still selling the controller for ¥19,800 (with ¥8,500 delivery fee).

Play-Asia has entries for the controller, digital edition console cover, and disc edition console cover, but they’re not currently in stock. Still, you can sign up to be notified whenever they do become available.

We also recommend checking the FF16 Reddit for threads with potential links to outlets that have pre-orders open for these items. This thread in particular is how we found the AitaiKuji links. How to fix PS5 stick drift

There are a few different ways you can fix PS5 stick drift, but some are more effective than others.

• Reset Your DualSense Controller: Entirely reset your DualSense Controller and reconnect it with factory settings. Take a pin and press the small button on the back of the controller for five seconds, and then your controller will reset.
• Update The DualSense Controller Software: You can update the DualSense Controller software wirelessly now by first navigating through the settings menu to the accessories submenu. Once you’re in that menu, scroll to the controller options, and tap the ‘check for update’. If your controller isn’t on the most recent firmware, then you’ll be able to update your controller here.

• Replace The Joysticks: We’re not going to dive into this here, but you can replace the joysticks on a DualSense controller if you need to. They’re the same joysticks as those on the PS4, and you can buy replacement sticks online from places like eBay. You’ll need an opening pick, a Spudger, a 00 Screwdriver, Tweezers, and a soldering workstation in addition to the sticks themselves. It’s pretty difficult to do, but iFixit has the steps you need, or you can watch the video below:

Could a temperature changing PS5 controller become a reality?

We’re firmly in the camp of “never say never” but patents hardly ever come to fruition. Nevertheless, it’s interest to see that Sony’s still fiddling with an idea that first cropped up in 2012.

Back then, Sony filed a patent that would make the PS3 Move motion controller (remember those?) become hot and cold depending on what’s happening in the game. Now, a newly-published patent, spotted by Exputer, suggests that Sony’s modified its original idea.

The new patent discusses a controller that contains a sensor with deformable elastic that “detects user’s contact with or deforming action of the elastic member, and outputs an electric signal based on the detected contact or deforming action in question.”

The controller would use gel-like flexible materials to “enrich haptic experiences.” So imagine picking up a block of ice in a game for whatever reason, and the controller triggering a response that makes it feel a bit cold to the touch.

How to pair and connect your PS5 controller with Apple devices

As spotted by MacRumors and later confirmed by Apple, those running the freshly-released iOS 16.4 can now pair their controller. iOS 16.4, iPadOS 16.4, macOS Ventura 13.3, and tvOS 16.4 were rolled out on March 27th.

Follow these steps outlined by Apple to pair your controller:

1. Make sure that your controller is turned off.
2. Press and hold the PS button and the Create (or Share) button at the same time until the light bar begins to flash. The controller is now in pairing mode, which makes it discoverable by your Apple device.
3. Open Bluetooth settings on your Apple device, then select the controller from the list of nearby devices.
   • iPhone, iPad: Connect Bluetooth devices
   • Apple TV: Connect Bluetooth devices
   • Mac: Connect Bluetooth devices
4. If the controller pairs but doesn’t connect, press the PS button on the controller.

Apple now supports three PlayStation controllers: DualShock 4, the standard DualSense, and DualSense Edge.

As a reminder, players can now wirelessly update DualSense, DualSense Edge, and PSVR 2 Sense controllers.

PS5 controller wireless updates

Once the new PS5 update has been successfully installed, PS5 users can accept the prompt to update their controller without the need to plug it in with a USB-C cable.

Here are the relevant patch notes from the new update:

Wireless Device Update for DualSense Wireless Controller: You can now update the DualSense wireless controller device software with a wireless connection. If you have trouble updating the device software wirelessly, connect your controller to your PS5 console using the USB cable to update it. You’ll be able to update wirelessly for the next update.

Provided the controller has enough charge, it will be able to update wirelessly, removing the need for users to go to the system and plug it in.

If you’re anything like me, you have regularly skipped the update screen as you simply couldn’t be bothered getting up and trying to find the cable. Now there is less of an excuse.

Of course, from an accessibility aspect, this is a huge win for those who aren’t able to easily update the controller using a wire.

The PS5 DualSense controller is receiving a lot of love lately, with this third-party creating hall effect analog sticks that should put a stop to pesky stick drift.

New PS5 hall effect controller to fix stick drift issues

In response to a question on Twitter, GuliKit confirmed that it intends to make a PS5 hall effect controller with paddles:

Existing DualSense Edge owners will, in theory, be able to swap out the stock analog sticks with the new hall effect joysticks, once they can be bought.

Though there’s no estimated release date on when these hall effect products will become available, it’s likely that the DualSense Edge kit will be released first, as GuliKit has confirmed that making them is easier “for its modular design.”

GuliKit is no stranger to hall effect tech, as it sells hall effect joysticks for Nintendo Switch and Xbox.

For those happy with the standard DualSense controller, there is going to be a limited-edition LeBron James version. As for the DualSense Edge, it’s now being sold in more retailers.

Specifically, the LeBron James PS5 Dualsense controller has the Midnight Black color variant as a base. The touch panel is emblazoned with the saying: “Nothing is given. Everything is earned.” The right-hand side of the controller features additional phrases: “Chosen Ones,” “Build, Uplift, Empower,” and “I Promise.”

Meanwhile, the left-hand side has graffiti-like crowns in various colors to signify Lebron’s nickname of “King James.” To highlight this crossover collaboration between James and PlayStation, the back of the controller has a simple image of a yellow crown, a small ‘x’, and then the traditional four-button PlayStation layout penned in white.

In a PlayStation blog post, Lebron hopes that his designs for the controller and console cover are inspiring:

It’s still crazy to think a kid from Akron who grew up playing games is getting to create something like this. Designing a console cover and controller with PlayStation that gives a nod to my I Promise students and where we come from is a pretty cool thing.

The LeBron James PS5 controller and console cover will be available later this year and will be exclusive to PlayStation Direct. Given that James is not the only PlayStation Playmaker, future PS5 accessories featuring the designs of other celebrities could be released in the future.

As Sony’s customizable DualSense Edge PS5 controller has only just become available at US retailers, the price is almost identical between all outlets. Walmart is marginally cheaper at $199, with other retailers plucking for $199.99. Your choice of retailer is most likely going to come down to availability and delivery options.

Our review found that DualSense Edge is “easily the best gaming controller Sony has ever put out”, although there are problems with its short battery life. There are alternative third-party options for a customizable PS5 controller, including the PDP Victrix Pro, SCUF Reflex Pro, and TCP Ultimate, although they compromise on adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, or price. Make sure to do your research before taking the plunge!

PS5 Dualsense was the best-selling accessory in US for January 2023

U.S. video game hardware spending was flat compared to a year ago, at $393 million. Growth in PlayStation 5 and Switch hardware spending was offset by declines across other platforms.

While Piscatella does not have any specific numbers on how much each platform has risen or fallen in sales, he shared on Twitter:

He continues in another tweet: “PlayStation 5 was the U.S. market’s best-selling hardware platform of January 2023 in both unit and dollar sales, with Switch ranking 2nd across both measures.”

A 14% drop in accessories spending was mainly due to consumers choosing not to spend on Gamepads, though the PS5 Dualsense Midnight Black controller was the best-selling accessory for the month in terms of dollar sales.

The NPD report also corroborates the January 2023 PS Store download charts, with Dead Space coming in at second place for the month and Forspoken coming in seventh.

As expected, Modern Warfare 2 sits at the top of the pile. Two new entries into the Top 20 include Fire Emblem Engage at fifth and One Piece Odyssey in ninth. One caveat to the chart, though, is that Nintendo strangely does not share digital sales.

Hogwarts Legacy Dualsense sold out almost instantly in PlayStation Store

The MSRP for the controller is only $79.99, but the latest bids for the product (for the pre-orders) on eBay range from about $150 to $170. That’s not including the shipping for many listings.

At any rate, the immediacy of the listings for the US pre-orders of the Dualsense on the site suggests that scalper bots are in part to blame for the item’s lack of stock in the PlayStation Store.

Checking the latest posts about the controller on Twitter, some users were lucky enough to score a pre-order through the PlayStation Store. But a fair number of others say that the item was in their cart but was then told there was an error with the purchase. Or that the controller wasn’t even available to buy in the first place when it went live in the US at 10 pm PT / 1 pm ET.

In similar fashion, the controller pretty much sold out instantly when it was available in the UK, despite the fact that it is limited to one per customer due to high demand. A PlayStation blog post that advertised this special edition DualSense controller was recently scrubbed of any information about it.

Revealed yesterday, the Hogwarts Legacy Limited Edition Dualsense features an image of Hogwarts with a gold swirling motif of Ancient Magic. Sadly, the controller is not available for sale outside of the UK or US, nor is it available through third-party retailers.
