The wrestling world is dominated by the WWE, so it isn’t surprising that its video games have a headlock on that category, as well. Other passionate contenders have stepped into the ring — Fire Pro Wrestling World deserves some praise — but not many can compete with the production value, budget, and hilarious glitches of the WWE 2K games. AEW, however, can and has stepped up with AEW: Fight Forever, which has a large pool of talent that’s still somewhat new to the digital world. And this fresh roster is a big part of the game’s appeal, so here’s how each of them stacks up.

Anna Jay

This Georgia girl has a fat ass and a bad attitude, which translates to a rotten time for most of her opponents. The Queenslayer is fierce and not afraid to drop some serious offense in the ring or use foreign objects when the situation calls for it. Formerly of the Dark Order, Anna Jay A.S. has more recently allied herself with the Jericho Appreciation Society and tag partner Tay Melo, but it isn’t hard to imagine there’s ambition there for her own path. Her gear looks great and some people have announced publicly that they think she’s, “the hottest bitch in this place.” Gold is most likely in Anna’s future, but with a savvy player backing her, that’ll be sooner rather than later.

John Silver

The Dark Order has had a lot of ups and downs since its debut, but one of the standouts in their ranks as faces or heels has been John Silver. The muscular mound may be of smaller stature than most wrestling icons, but he can certainly go in the ring and has always felt like somewhat of an underdog, which makes it fun to play him against larger opponents or in matches with seemingly impossible odds. Johnny Hungiee may not be one of the most-picked characters in the game at first, but his charisma spills through even in this digital form. This student of Mikey Whipwreck’s is pro-meat, all beef, and purely entertaining.

Hikaru Shida

She isn’t just a former AEW Women’s World Champion, but the person to hold that belt the longest at this time, so let’s put a little respect on the name. Hikaru Shida is a woman of few words, a samurai on a mission, and as of late that has seen her facing off against The Outcasts. She’s a stylish person anywhere she goes, so it makes sense that her in-game model looks excellent, moves are fluid, and this Japanese warrior is a site to behold in action, especially when using her trademark kendo stick.

Powerhouse Hobbs

Will Hobbs lives up to the name Powerhouse. Everything he does is executed with raw strength and willpower. He is a dominant heel and his moves feel like any one of them could end a conflict right in the middle of the ring. The bigger guys aren’t usually my preferred combatants, but Powerhouse moves decently and I get a kick out of doing his Oklahoma Stampede finisher every time. Hobbs is a former member of Team Taz, associates with QTV, and held the TNT Championship, but his goal is to be the first African American AEW World Champion, and it seems like that chapter is already written in the Book of Hobbs, it’s just waiting to happen.

Jade Cargill

Her dominant reign may have hit a snag recently, but that doesn’t mean that Jade Cargill isn’t still that bitch. Cargill started out strong in the company, debuting in a feud involving Shaquille O’Neal, as well as Cody and Brandi Rhodes, and she’s continued to conquer the brand with the baddies and showed off her strength with an impressive TBS title run. She’s an imposing figure who sells the shit out of her moves, and it’s great how crisp that Jaded finisher looks in the game. Every piece of her assault feels like it’s going to hurt. Cargill has shown improvement over her time in the company and she’s the type to do stylish and nerdy entrances (Mortal Kombat, X-Men, and Thundercats – her gear looks good, but those would have been great to see here), leaving quite the impression. Jade is the brand of heel this game needs.

Nyla Rose

As a wrestler, it took a little time for Nyla Rose to grow on me. I was way more interested in her life as an actress, her work with Marvel Comics, and the path she is taking as a transgender athlete. Over the years, however, I came to respect the former champ’s in-ring work more and enjoy Rose’s matches, especially from a presentation standpoint. The Native Beast is a vicious heel and even in a loss, she comes across as a threat. Her model in the game isn’t perfect, but Nyla’s entrance with the mask and that song works very well. I was a bit surprised at how much I enjoy playing as Rose, as her moves can be a bit unruly at times and not connect. There’s just something satisfying about destroying opponents with that Beast Bomb.

Orange Cassidy

Whatever.

Penta El Zero M and Rey Fenix

I was first exposed to this duo in a fantastic promotion known as Lucha Underground and these two have never ceased to impress me since then. The Lucha Brothers are champions whether they’re currently holding belts or not, whether it’s AEW, ROH, or AAA, whether it’s together or in singles competition, both of these men are kings of the wrestling business. They have the look, moves, and off-the-charts showmanship even though they barely speak. This pair is also two-thirds of the dangerous Death Triangle group, which along with Pac, might be the most overall talented stable in the company.

Ricky Starks

The man who refers to himself as Absolute Ricky Starks is full of confidence, charisma, and interesting poses. He made his debut in an open challenge against Cody Rhodes and went on to join Team Taz, but everyone who took note of his NWA run knows that his path as a singles competitor is destined to be paved with more gold than just the FTW title. And his revolution will be televised. It’s just a shame that we don’t get to hear Starks more in the game.

Thunder Rosa

This is a wrestler who has made a name for herself in other companies and stands out for a multitude of reasons, but the face paint certainly helps. Thunder Rosa has an excellent look, but she’s definitely had some better gear than what we see here — at least she gets her flag. This ferocious fighter from the graveyards of Tijuana has been a part of some brutal matches, especially against Britt Baker, and being able to recreate those encounters is a thrill. The former Women’s World Champion can be a force of nature, but she has sadly been dealing with injuries as of late. However, her absence may just inspire players to pick the unstoppable warrior in this game even more.

Sammy Guevara

Sammy Guevara was one of the fresh faces in AEW that stuck out. He was a part of the first match to ever take place on Dynamite and as I read up on his training with Booker T, I was sure Guevara was someone to keep an eye on. Now, as one of the pillars of the company and a couple of titles under his belt, the ceiling for the Spanish God seems incredibly high. Playing someone with such spectacular aerial offense is exciting, especially since missing one or two high-risk maneuvers doesn’t take the player completely out of the match. And for those matches, I don’t want to feel like a daredevil I just hit that GTH, because it has such a satisfying crack when it connects.

MJF

He’s better than you (and me too).

THQ Nordic has released a demo for Alone in the Dark in the form of a playable prologue and revealed the game’s star-studded cast as well as its release date. Back in December 2022, it was reported that Stranger Things star David Harbour was working on a horror game alongside Jodie Comer. It has now been confirmed that the duo were working on Alone in the Dark.

Alone in the Dark demo available now on PS Store

Alone in the Dark’s playable prologue can be found on the PS Store along with a brief premise. Derceto’s resident Jeremy Hartwood is having some troubling thoughts and ends up disappearing. He sends a letter to his niece Emily (Comer) because she’s the only one who can understand what plagues her uncle’s mind. Together with detective Edward Carnby (Harbour), Emily investigates Jeremy’s disappearance.

This is both Harbour’s and Comer’s first foray into video games. According to THQ Nordic, Harbour “brings his trademark intensity to his role as Edward,” and Comer “portrays Emily with expert nuance.”

Alone in the Dark will release just in time for Halloween on October 25. The game is being directed by Amnesia: The Dark Descent and SOMA writer Mikael Hedberg, and will only be available on current-gen platforms.

THQ Nordic has offered to make an Alan Wake 2 physical version for PC and consoles after developer Remedy Entertainment announced the game would be digital only. The publisher has said it would “love” to be involved with the franchise again after previously making the disc version of the first Alan Wake for PC.

Remedy has no plans to release Alan Wake 2 on disc

Remedy has declared “there are currently no plans to release Alan Wake 2 on disc,” but THQ Nordic is urging the company to think again. The publisher reasons that “just because ONE person (or company) does not love physical, there is plenty who still do” and that it would “love to go at it again!”

The decision to only release the game digitally has caused dismay among some players who still cling to physical media. Remedy states one of the reasons for the decision is that “a large number of [players] have shifted to digital only,” something that is backed up by a report from GamesIndustry.biz from December 2022 noting that 94% of game sales were digital for 2022. However, that still leaves some who prefer physical sales.

Another of those reasons was to keep the cost of Alan Wake 2 down to $59.99/€59.99 on PS5, but several players claim they would be happy to pay $70 for a physical version, especially if it was a limited collector’s edition.

However, there will be a $79.99/€79.99/£64.99 Digital Deluxe Edition of the game for fans, which will include the following list of digital goodies as well as access to the post-launch expansions.

  • Expansion Pass (Night Springs Expansion and Lake House Expansion)
  • Nordic Shotgun Skin for Saga (Part of the Expansion Pass)
  • Parliament Shotgun Skin for Alan
  • Crimson Windbreaker for Saga
  • Celebrity Suit for Alan
  • Lantern Charm for Saga

The THQ Nordic Digital Showcase showed off 14 games including four that were being announced for the first time, but the bigger surprise came at the end of the show when they revealed they currently have more than 20 unannounced games in development. Of those 26 games from THQ Nordic, one of them is a new South Park game from South Park Digital Studios.

What is coming next from THQ Nordic?

South Park

THQ Nordic announced four new games at the Digital Showcase: Alone in the Dark, Space for Sale, Wreckreation, and Tempest Rising. Right now, the publisher has 43 games in development, not counting any from mobile specialists Handy Games. Of those 43 games, 26 were still unannounced by the end of the Showcase, but a hint appeared for one of them. The logo appeared for South Park Digital Studios while audio of Randy Marsh from South Park could be heard screaming “Hot, hot, hot, hot!” in the background.

We’ve known for a while that a new South Park game is in development. South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone had already revealed they were creating “a 3D video game that is set in the world of South Parkat an unknown developer. When a job advert for a Lead Level Designer for a South Park game appeared at Question, we assumed it was the same game. Little else is known about the South Park game aside from those brief hints, but it looks like an announcement may be imminent from publisher THQ Nordic. The publisher may make an appearance at Gamescom with more new games, although they haven’t announced anything publicly about this.

In other news, SEGA is adamant that Sonic Frontiers will not be another of the numerous games delayed this year. Elsewhere, Final Fantasy 14 Patch 6.2 – Buried Memory will be released later this month, and we also got details on the upcoming patch 6.25.

Alone in the Dark PS5 reboot has leaked ahead of THQ Nordic’s event today. We were expecting the game to make an appearance today following a tease by known insider The Snitch, but it happened to be a Belgian retailer who pulled the trigger prematurely and published a listing for the game’s PS5 version on its website. Apparently, Alone in the Dark is based on the first game in the series, and is a psychological horror experience set in the 1920s. The game’s southern U.S. gothic horror setting is inspired by Lovecraft.

Alone in the Dark PS5 features two protagonists

alone in the dark ps5

Players can step into the shoes of either Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood to solve the mystery of the latter’s uncle disappearing. Carnby is a detective who works with Hartwood to locate the missing uncle in the mansion of Derceto, which happens to be a psychiatric asylum. Something lurks in the darkness there, of course, and players must figure out what’s going on.

Alone in the Dark is written by Mikael Hedberg, author of SOMA and Amnesia. An official overview reads:

This love letter to the cult game of the 90s will make you live a story as sinister as memorable through the eyes of one of the two protagonists. As Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood, explore the various environments, fight monsters, solve puzzles and discover the terrible truth about Derceto’s mansion. You will meet strange occupiers, nightmarish kingdoms, dangerous monsters, and lift the veil on an evil conspiracy. At the confluence between reality, mystery and madness, the adventure that awaits you may undermine your certainties.

Stay tuned for THQ Nordic’s event later today, where we’ll probably get a trailer and release information.

In other news, it looks like Spotify is getting a native PS5 app as well, and Blizzard is sunsetting Overwatch loot boxes.

Reliable insider The Snitch is apparently teasing a new Alone in the Dark game ahead of current IP owner THQ Nordic’s event later this week. The Snitch, who has an impeccable track record thus far, posted yet another cryptic tweet in his usual style but folks were quick to utilize Google and point out that this time, they lifted a line straight from 2005’s Alone in the Dark movie.

How likely is a new Alone in the Dark game?

If it wasn’t The Snitch who posted the tweet above, we probably would have dismissed rumors of a new Alone in the Dark. Although it’s a long-running franchise, its games have never really fared well critically or commercially. Some of us old souls do have fond memories of Alone in the Dark but I wouldn’t say the franchise has a cult following either.

Since its introduction in 1992, Alone in the Dark has been passed around to numerous developers and publishers. It was originally made by Infogrames/Atari and its last mainline entry released in 2008 for consoles and PC. Developed by Eden Games, 2008’s Alone in the Dark was panned by critics, prompting backlash from then-publisher Atari. It only sold a little over one million copies.

Enter THQ Nordic, who decided to pick up the IP in 2008 along with Act of War.

THQ Nordic will hold its event on Friday, August 12th.

In other news, Sony’s Inzone M9 gaming monitor is available to pre-order again ahead of launch, and “Press X For Trophies” is a new game that mocks PS Store shovelware.

When Biomutant was first released in May 2021, developer Experiment 101 promised the game would appear natively on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S “sometime in the near-ish future”.  While a year later may not be what most people consider to be the “near-ish” future, it does seem like the PS5 version is still in the works and possibly coming soon after it made an appearance on the PSN backend.

A native version of Biomutant on PS5

A PS5 version of Biomutant has made an appearance on the PSN backend with a title ID of PPSA06256_00 and concept ID 229899. As noticed by Reddit, there is also a thumbnail image of the game’s artwork to accompany the listing. It doesn’t come with a release date, but it can be assumed this version of the game will be coming soon. All that Experiment 101 has said is a brief hint on Twitter back in January that there was more to come for the game.

At the moment, Biomutant is only available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. While the PS4 version can be played on PS5 thanks to backward compatibility, it will only run at native 1080p at 60 FPS, although it would upscale to 4K at 60 FPS thanks to Dynamic Resolution. In contrast, the Xbox One version would run natively in 4k at 60 FPS. At the time, the developer said native 4K had been deactivated on PS5 “due to stability – and performance – related reasons“. While there are no details on what next-gen benefits a PS5 version will bring, it can be hoped that native 4K will be amongst them.

In other news, Assassin’s Creed Origins will be getting its promised 60fps patch for PS5 and Xbox series X|S players on June 2. Elsewhere, Thursday’s PlayStation State of Play show will be part of this year’s Summer Game Fest.

Nobody can accuse Embracer Group of resting on their laurels. While declaring their financial results for the last quarter, the company revealed they have 216 games in development between their many studios and publishers. Of those games, more than 25 of them are AAA games they’re aiming to release by March 2026 at the latest.

What AAA games are in development at Embracer?

While 216 games are in development, only 56 of them have been announced. This means many of the AAA games are yet to be announced too, and they might not necessarily be coming to PlayStation either. Of those that we know about, Deep Silver has Saints Row arriving on August 23. They are also still at work on Dead Island 2, and if the conference call is anything to go by, there’s a chance we may see this game before the end of fiscal year 2023 (before the end of March 2023).

Prime Matter has Payday 3 in development, although this is likely still several years away. Saber Interactive is working on seven AAA games, including Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 due later this year. Aspyr Media has Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake, but this is also likely several years away. Finally, Gearbox has ten AAA games in progress, including Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands due to appear on March 25.

There are plenty of other Embracer titles due to appear soon. March will also bring Elex II, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, Shadow Warrior 3, and Monster Energy Supercross 5. Road 96 will follow in April while Evil Dead: The Game will appear in May. Spellforce III Reforced was delayed until June. During the conference call, Milestone CEO Luisa Bixio also confirmed the company has acquired the Superbike World Championship license and the first SBK game will be released in July.

Embracer also recorded a few successes from their recent and most popular titles. Metro Exodus recently reached 6 million sales, while Hot Wheels Unleashed has reached 1 million sales and is Milestone’s most successful game yet. Over the last quarter, the Borderlands franchise has sold over 2 million copies while Borderlands 3 passed 15 million lifetime sales. Deep Rock Galactic doubled its player count after it was downloaded more than 9 million times on PlayStation Plus. The bad news was that Chorus failed to meet management expectations despite positive attention from fans and critics.

In other news, Ubisoft has confirmed Skull & Bones is now a game that puts multiplayer first. Elsewhere, ANNO: Mutationem is due to be released next month.

When Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning was announced last year, THQ Nordic also announced a brand new DLC expansion Fatesworn to be released this year. Well, it’s just managing to meet that target. Fatesworn has finally received a release date and it will be hitting PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on December 14.

Fatesworn takes place after the events of Kingdoms of Amalur, when the Crystal war has ended and players have defeated the Gadlow. While the land’s residents were hoping for a more peaceful future, rumors have started circling about a threat from a brand new area of Amalur. In Mithros, a wintery land covered with snowy tundras, mountain villages, and procedurally-generated caverns of ice, the God of Chaos has awoken. Known as Telogrus, he’s gathering followers to create his own version of chaos.

With the lakeside city of Crownhold providing one of few safe havens, the Fatesworn now has to cross the dangerous land to take on the Niskaru as well as their Chaos companions. Players will need to master Chaos powers that come with a new non-combat Skill tree as well as a different class of weapons and armor. The full list of features is below:

Features:

  • Set in a completely new environment called Mithros featuring mountains and snowy landscape
  • Face the God of Chaos in 6h+ Main quest with a compelling storyline that concludes the game, featuring new and returning characters
  • “Chaos” as a completely new gameplay mechanic connected to weapons, enemies, rifts, and portals
  • Level cap raised to 50
  • The journey takes you to 2 entirely new dungeon sets
  • Enter Chaos Portals to explore 25 brand new Chaos Realm dungeons strewn across the Fatesworn world and the old world
  • New enemies and variations of existing enemies
  • New crafting items for weapons, gems, potions with new reagents and components
  • 6 new unique armor sets with very special and powerful traits
  • 21 new weapons and shields (9 chaos weapons, 15 unique)
  • New accessories like rings and amulets with powerful traits
  • New music by award-winning composer Grant Kirkhope
  • A new mysterious trader selling equipment lottery boxes, offering a new way to complete rare item sets
  • New twist of fate cards
  • Tons of new sidequests task quests and faction quests to fulfill
  • New villages and cities, with new houses and interiors and much more

The DLC expansion will be available from the PlayStation Store for $19.99 / €19.99 / £17.99. Alternatively, players can purchase the new Fate Edition of the game that will include the base game and the upcoming expansion. This will cost $54.99 / €54.99 / £47.99.
