Many argue against the need for new consoles, saying that it would likely drive up the price of development too high when there is still considerable power left in the current generation. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot is on the flip-side of that argument, saying that new consoles are in fact needed sooner rather than later to drive new, exciting IPs.
Speaking to MCV, he gave some insight on why he thinks the industry needs to move on:
Yes, the accessories and handhelds are really good, but I think it would be great for the industry to take advantage of technological advancements.
Processors are more and more powerful, graphics cards have moved on, there are many technologies that would help us deliver a better experience and help the industry to grow.
Guillemot goes on to explain why he feels the industry is currently in a “depression” over the longest era without a new console and why new IPs are better with the launch of a new console.
Consumers like the current formats, but there is not enough creativity at the end of a cycle to really spark the business.
At this stage in the consoles’ lifecycles it is possible to do new IP, but it will be more attractive when new consoles come along. That’s when consumers are more open to trying new things.
