Gamers may still have to wait a while until they can get their hands on Sony’s Project Q PlayStation handheld, but thanks to leaked footage, they can now see the portable PlayStation in action. A leaked Project Q video, along with several images of the handheld, show what looks to be an early version of the final hardware ahead of Project Q’s rumored November release.

Leaked Project Q video shows the portable PlayStation in action for the first time

As initially reported by Insider Gaming, a series of images and a short video clip of Sony’s Project Q handheld have appeared online. The images, which show Project Q in both its finished and disassembled state, reportedly came from a factory producing Sony’s handheld. Following the release of the images, a leaked video showing Project Q’s system software was posted online by Twitter user Zuby_Tech.

While the leaked Project Q video doesn’t show any games being played on Sony’s PlayStation streaming handheld, it does give potential buyers a glimpse at how snappy the software may be. Running on what appears to be a custom version of Android, the system looks remarkably responsive as the person filming navigates through multiple menus using both the analog sticks and the touchscreen. A half-empty battery icon visible on the system’s home screen could add support to reports of Project Q’s short battery life, but it’s too early to tell at this point.

Designed to stream players’ existing PS5 library rather than play standalone games like Nintendo’s Switch, Sony’s unorthodox approach to handheld gaming with Project Q is a big gamble. As PS5 sales continue to grow in multiple markets, though, it’s one that could pay off if Sony can sell PS5 owners on the idea of gaming on the go. But, with economic uncertainty leading many to bring in their budgets in recent months, even if Project Q costs less than $300 as rumored, the asking price may still be too high for many players’ pocketbooks.

Microsoft seemingly knows the price range for the unannounced PS5 Slim and PS5 handheld Project Q. At least that’s the impression the company gave in a legal filing during its court battle with the Federal Trade Commission over the Activision Blizzard acquisition.

Expected price of PS5 Slim and PS5 handheld Project Q

According to Microsoft, Sony is expected to release a PS5 Slim later this year for around $399.99 and Project Q for under $300. For context, Microsoft was arguing against the FTC’s definition of console market, stating that Nintendo should not be excluded because both Xbox and PlayStation offer cheaper versions of their consoles with prices on par with the Switch. The FTC argues that Microsoft and Sony are the only two players in the high-end console market.

“Xbox Series S is sold for $50 less than the Switch OLED model,” Microsoft wrote. “PlayStation likewise sells a less expensive Digital Edition for $399.99, and is expected to release a PlayStation 5 Slim later this year at the same reduced price point.” A footnote on the same page of the document then mentions Project Q’s expected price as under $300.

Microsoft may be referring to the rumored PS5 with detachable disc drive as PS5 Slim. According to known insider Tom Henderson, the revised model is scheduled for release later this year and may replace the launch model.

Semiconductor company Qualcomm says it’s open to working with PlayStation and Nintendo on handheld gaming devices. Speaking at Computex 2023, the company’s senior vice president Alex Katouzian revealed that Qualcomm has already been in talks with Sony, but didn’t say whether they discussed the upcoming Project Q or ideas for the future.

Future PlayStation handheld devices likely to focus on mobile games and streaming

Keep any expectations of a PlayStation Portable or PlayStation Vita successor in check because Qualcomm is referring to mobile and streaming devices.

“A lot of console game companies want these handheld devices,” Katouzian said at Computex 2023 (via TrustedReviews). “They’re not necessarily high-end graphics capable devices, but they want to keep all those mobile gamers in their own ecosystem.”

Qualcomm indicated its interest in going after the handheld market and partnering with console manufacturers. On its talks with Sony and Nintendo, Qualcomm said that both console makers are “interested in having handheld gaming capabilities, so obviously they would reach out and talk to us.” Katouzian didn’t say what those talks entailed but it’s possible that Sony sought advice on Project Q.

Project Q, Sony’s PS5-compatible handheld streaming device, is expected to launch this November. Tech specs have yet to be revealed.

Sony has yet to detail its PlayStation handheld, code-named Project Q, but a new report has already spilled the beans about its battery life.

How long is the Project Q Battery Life

According to known insider Tom Henderson, who originally leaked the handheld and its release window, Project Q’s battery is only going to last 3-4 hours.

Writing for his publication Insider Gaming, Henderson claims that Project Q’s short battery life will be on brand with the DualSense‘s battery life. Interestingly, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said during last week’s PlayStation Showcase that Project Q will have all the features and buttons of the DualSense. It looks like the handheld may have inherited the controller’s battery life as a feature as well.

Sony has yet to reveal Project Q’s price, but considering the handheld is only a streaming device, one can only hope that it’ll come with a reasonable price tag. This is especially if Henderson’s report about its battery life is true.

Project Q is currently rumored to be slated for release in mid-late November 2023. Sony has promised more details in the coming months so we expect to see full tech specs and its retail price sometime this summer.

Insider Tom Henderson, who originally leaked the PlayStation streaming handheld code-named Project Q, claims that the device’s release date is set for November 2023. Project Q was briefly shown off during this week’s PlayStation Showcase, with Sony confirming reports that it features an 8-inch HD screen.

When will Sony announce PlayStation handheld release date?

Sony didn’t dedicate more than a few seconds to Project Q during the showcase. All we were told was that the handheld is capable of streaming any game over Wi-Fi, and comes with all the buttons and features of the PS5’s DualSense controller. However, fans were later promised more details “in the months ahead.”

Considering Henderson has been spot on with his recent Sony leaks, it looks like the company already has a release window for Project Q in mind. So we expect the handheld’s release date to be announced alongside its tech specs and price tag in coming months.

Earlier today, Henderson and fellow insider The Snitch revealed that Sony withheld some announcements from May 2023’s PlayStation Showcase. The company reportedly had a few trailers and announcements ready to go, but they were surprisingly missing from the event.

It is now expected that Sony will hold another event in the coming months, and perhaps that’s when we’ll see more of Project Q.

While the PlayStation Showcase was mostly centered around games, Sony did have a couple hardware announcements, too. One of these announcements was a set of earbuds, and the other was a streaming-only device codenamed Project Q.

What is Project Q?

Project Q is a handheld that can only stream titles from a PlayStation 5 through remote play or Wi-Fi and can’t play games natively. It has all the normal PlayStation buttons, as well as adaptive triggers and haptic feedback just like the DualSense, which it looks strikingly similar to. It also has an 8-inch HD screen, but it wasn’t clear what kind of screen it is. The trailer noted that games must be installed on the PS5, which implies that it won’t be possible to stream PlayStation Plus Premium titles.

There’s no word on how much it will cost or when it is coming out. However, more information will be made available sometime in the future.

This device was rumored back in April, as insider Tom Henderson noted that Sony was making a streaming device codenamed Q Lite. It was described as a handheld that looked like a DualSense with an 8-inch screen in the middle, which ended up being quite accurate. The report also said it played games in up to 1080p, but Sony did not confirm those kinds of specs.

Following an Exputer report and a subsequent gameplay leak, Ubisoft Project Q has officially been confirmed. Taking to Twitter over the weekend, the developer made light of the situation and decided to open the registration page for upcoming playtests, which mentions a PS4 and PS5 release. Ubisoft also said that Project Q is not a battle royale game as it had previously been reported.

What’s Ubisoft Project Q?

First things first, Project Q is a code name. Ubisoft isn’t ready to announce the title yet. However, the company has confirmed that Project Q is a team battle arena game that’ll let players “truly own the experience.” “The game will feature a variety of PvP modes with one single goal in mind: FUN!” Ubisoft tweeted. Interestingly, the team also confirmed in a subsequent tweet that Project Q will not feature NFTs – something it has come under fire for in recent months.

As far as the leaked gameplay is concerned, the footage below was shared by Exputer’s Tom Henderson. Do note that it’s a very early build and leaked videos tend to be of poor quality so this doesn’t represent the final product whatsoever.

If you’re interested in partaking in upcoming play tests, head over to the registration page.

We’ll update our readers when we have more information about Project Q.

In other news, a judge has dismissed most of the gender discrimination lawsuit against PlayStation but the fight is far from over, and Sony has confirmed that PS Plus users will be able to simply upgrade to higher tiers when the new service rolls out.
