Mortal Kombat 1‘s first Kombat Pack leaked right near the game’s reveal. That leak has now ended up being accurate, as Homelander, Peacemaker, Omni-Man, Takeda, Ermac, and Quan Chi have all been confirmed through another trailer.

The Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Pack has six base roster characters

Another official Mortal Kombat account put the trailer out a tad early before the reveal at Comic-Con, but NetherRealm Studios released the official one shortly after. It appears as though Homelander and Peacemaker have Antony Starr and John Cena’s likenesses, respectively, but it’s not clear if the stars will provide the voices. For context, Sylvester Stallone and Peter Weller voiced Rambo and RoboCop, respectively, in Mortal Kombat 11, but The Terminator was not voiced by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Quan Chi and Ermac have long been popular Mortal Kombat characters. However, Takeda is a relative newcomer. He’s Kenshi Takahashi’s son and made his debut in Mortal Kombat X. The pack will also include five Kameo Fighters: Tremor, Khameleon, Mavado, Johnny Cage, and Ferra.

Homelander was the only one given a release window, and will be in the game sometime in spring 2024. The Kombat Pack also comes with one-week early access to each character and the already announced Jean-Claude Van Damme skin for Johnny Cage.

This wasn’t all NetherRealm showed at the panel, as the first trailer had a few other character reveals.

NetherRealm Studios has taken to Comic-Con in a big way to show off more of Mortal Kombat 1. The studio is holding a panel promising three trailers, the first of which had plenty of character reveals.

The newest Mortal Kombat 1 trailers are full of reveals

This trailer showed that Baraka, Li Mei, and Tanya will be in the main roster as playable characters, the latter two of whom were in the 3D era of games. Tanya was a DLC fighter in Mortal Kombat X, but Li Mei hasn’t been playable since 2006’s Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Darrius was also in the trailer as a Kameo Fighter and has also not been playable since Armageddon. The trailer has gameplay sections for each character, giving users a look at their unique traits and styles.

The story portions revolve around the Umgadi, a collection of warrior priestesses selected from the first-born daughters of Outworld. They are meant to protect the royal family, which is the cause for conflict, as it seems as though Kitana’s father was killed under Li Mei’s leadership.

This panel has a few stars from the game, including Kelly Hu and Yuri Lowenthal. Hu has previously been in the Mortal Kombat series as D’Vorah, Sindel, and Frost in Mortal Kombat X and reprised her role as D’Vorah in Mortal Kombat 11. She is also going to be Ashrah in the upcoming animated Mortal Kombat film titled Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match. Lowenthal plays Smoke in Mortal Kombat 1.

Mortal Kombat 1 has already suffered a few leaks, one of which even detailed a batch of crossover DLC characters that ended up also being in these Comic-Con reveals. NetherRealm showed a second story trailer that had other characters like Motaro and Reiko in it, but it’s unclear if they are playable or just characters.

NetherRealm Studios has held its first Kombat Kast for Mortal Kombat 1. And it contained quite a bit of new information, including a gameplay breakdown of Scorpion and Johnny Cage.

Mortal Kombat 1’s Johnny Cage has a special meter for taunts

This gameplay showcase after the batch of character reveals went into both fighters before ending in a full match between the two (at 43:34 in the video below). QA lead Stephanie Brownback noted that the characters are a collection of 30 years of history, and the team looked at core moves that it had to bring back, ones that needed a redesign, and what new attacks could be implemented. For example, Scorpion has his signature spear and teleport, as well as his hellfire move he has had in many previous games. However, he can now use a kusarigama for long-range sweeps and a spinning move that can serve as a combo ender.

Johnny Cage can still do a sliding kick and groin punch and is a “mix-up and pop-up combo starter machine.” But he doesn’t have his classic green projectiles or shadow energy because the team wanted him to be more grounded.

NetherRealm has buffed him in other ways, as one of his new moves is a quick dash that he can use to close space, while another new ability lets players spend a bar of meter after breaking a throw to keep the opponent from performing throws for a limited time. His most drastic change revolves around his unique Hype Meter that builds as he performs taunts or if players choose to add flourishes to his special moves.

Fast opponents can punish these taunts, but building up that meter allows him to go into “Kombat Time” where a spotlight goes over him that powers him up. This temporary buff allows Johnny Cage players to special cancel special moves into other special moves, meaning it is possible to do multiple groin punches or shadow kicks quickly in the same combo. It’s also possible to amplify a special move without using the traditional meter during this time.

NetherRealm declined to say when the next Kombat Kast was (more reveals were teased for Comic-Con, though). However, it did note that it was listening to player feedback from the recent stress test and stated it heard all the criticisms of Mortal Kombat 1’s movement. Many criticized how awkward and slow moving around was, especially in comparison to the fan-favorite reboot Mortal Kombat 9. Similar complaints were levied at Mortal Kombat 11’s movement during its pre-release tests, and NetherRealm did end up changing the movement before launch.

NetherRealm Studios’ first post-Summer Game Fest trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 didn’t just have one character reveal; it had five. These reveals included Frost, Cyrax, Sektor, Rain, and Smoke.

The Mortal Kombat 1 trailer shows how the roster has expanded

This new Lin Kuei trailer shows all five in action in some capacity. However, not all of them are created equally. Frost, Sektor, and Cyrax seem to be limited to Kameos. Rain and Smoke, on the other hand, were fully playable. Characters can be both Kameos and combatants on the main roster, but it has not been confirmed which ones here are those few who are part of both lineups. Scorpion (who is on both rosters) was also shown as a Kameo Fighter, which was only hinted at before.

NetherRealm describes Smoke as a “fellow member of the ancient warrior clan with a mastery of stealth and practical magic.” Rain, who seems to be an antagonist, is the “High Mage of Outworld who has honed his craft of water magic into a fierce weapon and now hopes to learn the realms’ darkest and most powerful sorcery.” The human version of Smoke hasn’t been in a Mortal Kombat game since 2011’s Mortal Kombat 9, but Cyber Smoke was DLC in Mortal Kombat X. Rain was in Mortal Kombat 9, Mortal Kombat X, and Mortal Kombat 11, but wasn’t playable in X without mods (and was DLC in 9 and 11).

As is usually the case with these reveals, the footage also shows violent Fatal Blows, a few Fatalities, and general combat that teases how these characters can be used in fights. More will be revealed in the future, as NetherRealm is planning to hold more Kombat Kasts that contain further breakdowns.

The trailer also delves into the story and teases what’s to come for the Lin Kuei. It has been hinted at that Sub-Zero and Scorpion (who are brothers in this timeline) are going to have some sort of disagreement in the future, and this sets the stage for that conflict even more.

Liu Kang’s universe in Mortal Kombat 1 is a big shift from the established lore, which NetherRealm Studios has constantly hinted at. Some of those shifts have been defined in new character bios that lay out how these current cast is going to be change in the upcoming reboot. And in addition to the character bios, NetherRealm has confirmed when the game’s first Kombat Kast will air.

The Mortal Kombat 1 cast is going through some big changes

These character bios recently went live on the official Mortal Kombat website and cover Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Kitana, Kung Lao, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Kenshi Takahashi, and Mileena. Liu Kang is not all that different since this is the timeline he created. Johnny Cage is also quite similar to his past appearances since his story is that he is a fading celebrity that joins Liu Kang’s quest to boost his notoriety.

The changes for the other characters have been hinted at in the trailers or past interviews, but these bios provide more details. Mileena and Kitana are twin sisters, and Mileena is the heir to Outworld’s throne, while Kitana is her bodyguard.

However, Mileena is infected with the Tarkat disease that will “[force] her into battle” if her secret is found out. Kitana is thought to be the more levelheaded of the two, but, given how she was born just after Mileena, isn’t the rightful heir. Mileena is classically made through cloning Kitana with Tarkatan DNA, and this new disease not only questions how Tarkatans like Baraka can exist in this universe, but also how the inevitable conflict between the two new sisters will play out.

Sub-Zero and Scorpion are also now siblings in this universe, which was previously revealed (and hinted out through the identical Lin Kuei medallions in the initial cinematic trailer). Sub-Zero is the Lin Kuei Grandmaster, but, after not being threatened for generations, he is tired of trying to defend Earthrealm from danger that he doesn’t think are coming. Scorpion disagrees with this notion of casting off the clan’s traditional responsibilities and “fears that he may one day have to battle his brother for control over the Lin Kuei’s legacy.” Scorpion and Sub-Zero have typically been from separate rival clans — the Shirai Ryu and Lin Kuei, respectively — and this storyline seems to be getting to that rivalry through other means.

Kung Lao is from a small farm in Fengjian and fears that his life won’t amount to much. This changes when called by Liu Kang to help protect Earthrealm. This is the opposite of Raiden, who is also from the same area, but is content with tending to the fields. He is hesitant to help Earthrealm and “become the great warrior that Liu Kang knows he can be.” Of course, this is quite different from Raiden’s past story since he has always been portrayed as a god and not as a mortal.

Kenshi has a simple bio, but one that is still quite different. The Takahashi family had lost its prized sword named Sento and joined the bakuto, the predecessor to the yakuza, for protection. Kenshi wishes to free his family from this control and the corruption and attempts to steal back Sento in order to make that happen.

These are only the confirmed characters and more are on the way. It’s unclear when more will be revealed, but it’s possible the roster will grow rather soon. The first developer-led Kombat Kast is slated for July 6 at 10 a.m. PT and will discuss Kameos and have full gameplay breakdowns of Scorpion and Johnny Cage.

Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has said that NetherRealm Studios chose to make Mortal Kombat 1 before Injustice 3 for a number of good reasons and reassured fans that the developer isn’t done with the Injustice franchise.

Why Mortal Kombat 1 was prioritized over Injustice 3

In an interview with The Jeff Gerstmann Show, Boon said that NetherRealm decided to switch to a newer engine after Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, which was a monumental task. As a result, NetherRealm anticipated that the next game’s development would take a considerable amount of time, and the team didn’t want there to be a massive gap between Mortal Kombat 11 and its successor.

The engine upgrade was also followed by disruptions caused by the global Covid-19 pandemic, leading to developers having to figure out a way forward amidst all the shutdowns.

“The thought was that if we did an Injustice game, it would have taken even longer and been seven years between MK games,” Boon said. “So, we said, ‘Okay, let’s do another Mortal Kombat game,’ and then the plan would be to go back to Injustice.”

While Boon didn’t make any promises, now that Mortal Kombat 1 is inching closer to release, Injustice 3 might be next in line.

The Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay trailer shows off Kameo Fighters

The trailer goes into some of the story and mechanics, drifting between cutscenes and fights. The Kameo Fighters are also in the trailer. Co-creator Ed Boon explained this system where players can pick a second character from a separate roster, which will give players an assist. Some characters will be a Kameo Fighter and a regular fighter, though.

Sonya, Kano, Jax, Stryker, and Goro were just some of the Kameo Fighters. Kenshi was also another addition to the main roster. The Kameos also call back to the old Mortal Kombat games, hence their retro costumes. They can be called in for an assist with one button and are dictated by a meter.

The trailer had some Fatalities, too, as well as X-Ray-like special moves. These seem to change depending on the Kameo Fighter. For example, Kung Lao pushes the enemy into his sharp hat, while Scorpion jumps in and impales them with his kunai.

The September release date had already been revealed, much like its special editions. NetherRealm didn’t, however, speak about Mortal Kombat 1’s DLC, which reportedly leaked earlier.

The full Mortal Kombat 1 reveal came with a lot of information, including its release date, special editions, and beta. NetherRealm Studios has just announced another way to play the game early through the Mortal Kombat 1 online stress test, which players can sign up for right now.

How to sign up for the Mortal Kombat 1 online stress test

As noted by the FAQ, the Mortal Kombat 1 stress test is not related to the pre-order beta that was previously announced. This is purely to test the “online infrastructure and identify potential issues ahead of the game’s launch.” Players can sign up on the Warner Bros. website, but not everyone is guaranteed a slot since those who get in will be “chosen at random.”

The test is only up for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players, much like the pre-order beta, yet cross-platform play won’t be enabled. It won’t require PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold to play, but players will have to have a Warner Bros. Games Account. Dates and characters have not been announced quite yet, either. The test will also only be for those in North America, Latin America, Brazil, and Europe.

The test will be very limited and will only let testers try out a one-on-one online multiplayer and a “limited” single-player arcade ladder against A.I. opponents.

Some assumed that the Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay reveal was slated for the upcoming PlayStation Showcase, given the proximity of the first real trailer and the showcase. However, that won’t be the case, as the first Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay will be at Summer Game Fest instead on June 8.

Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay won’t be at the PlayStation Showcase

Geoff Keighley himself confirmed the premiere on Twitter. He’ll be joined by series co-creator Ed Boon, so it’s likely that it will be more than a simple trailer and come with a short interview explaining the mechanics. The Kameo Fighter system is just one of those new mechanics that NetherRealm Studios has only teased. The show also starts at noon PT, but it is unknown when Mortal Kombat 1 will appear during that two-hour event.

NetherRealm and Geoff Keighley have worked together for reveals a few times in the past. The two collaborated to unveil Mortal Kombat 11 during The Game Awards in 2018 where Scorpion’s spear cut through Boon’s tongue-in-cheek presentation of the award for Best Sports/Racing Game. Kratos was also revealed for 2011’s Mortal Kombat during the 2010 iteration of the Video Game Awards.
